1978 350 into a 1986 z28

hey guys, its me again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i bought a motor from a freind.. its from a 78 camaro. i could of swore i read somewhere that the flywheel and tranny would bolt right up. well i was wrong. my question is this.. the bellhousing almost fits.. is it possible for me to switch over my 305 starter to the 350 and would it work? i guess i will need to go and get a whole new clutch pressureplate and flywheel as it is??

will my tranny i ahve now ever fit this motor? or am i going to need a whole new tranny from a 78 camaro? or any other year that would fit?

the only stats i can get frmo my manual tranny is this...

R1

13-51-097-901

614DF-U

WG 13-52-062...

the flywheel from the 305 does not fit. the 350 is much larger..

my full question is this... if i get a new flywheel and bellhousing is everything else going to fit/be the same? the splines on the tranny connect right up?
or is it better to just find a doner 78 to swap it all over?

thanks for all the help..

I can't answer your flywheel question, but you should probably use the 350 shortblock but keep your top end off the 305. The late 70s smog era heads and intakes are god awful.

Re: 1978 350 into a 1986 z28

hey again, ok so i ahve come up wtih a solution.. and im asking " approval " if you think it will work.. i think it will but you guys are the pro's...

http://www.geocities.com/popodpsaoud/flywheel.jpg

here is the pic of what im going to attempt to do.. because i just bought this flywheel and dont think getting a new flywheel will fix my problem because the starter is moved alot more over making me also need a bellhousing. i put my old starter on the 350 it bolted up fine. the bellhousing now fits.. in this picture im attemping to mount a 350 auto tranny flywheel to the 305 flywheel.. im going to bolt 3 boltz through it to the other one. and then im going to weld it all around at the back. it will work dimensionally.. i just wondeering about any other problems i may run into? will the balance be thrown off??

the auto flywheel is a little bit bigger but im going to cut it and make it smaller and weld it to the other flywheel.. and then the starter should still be able to grab the teeth because its only going to push it out about 1 cm more then what it is now.. if even...

i dont see anohter fix for this unless they happen to make a flywheel that will fit the 350 bolt pattern plus fit for the bellhousing... if you guys still dont understand i will take pictures of the problem...

any other suggestions would help alot thanks!

yea, dont weld flywheels together unless you are crazy, you'll harden and soften parts you dont want to, throw it completely off balance, and add some wacky moment loads that are nasty to calculate, oh and btw you would be unable to bolt it to the motor the way it seems to be drawn , also adds a lot of rotating mass that would rob what would seem like hp, but would actually be acceleration from rpm to rpm.

your 305 bolt pattern and bellhousing should be the same as a 350 though....

anyway it seems like you've got it figured out so, get to it, get that 350 in there!!! and good luck

it seems there were 2 different flywheels for the year 85 and 86 85 and earlier and 86 and later... so hopefully this will fix err up.... i really didn't wanna weld nothing cause i figured something would mess up... thanks for the reply

Re: 1978 350 into a 1986 z28

1986 they switched to a one piece rear main seal
this resulted in changes to the crank flange, where the flywheel bolts and as a result changes to the flywheel

i dont know much about your manual tranny but if its the stock tranny it is a t-5
the bellhousing on all sbc's fit the same

flywheels come in 2 sizes, 168 teeth and 153 teeth

since ur using an older block, u need to keep the older flywheel, or an old style flywheel
takle a look at the flywheel from the original engine
168tooth flywheels can accommodate 10.5" or 11" clutches
153 tooth flywheels can only work with 10.5" clutches

after u get the right flywheel clutch assembly to bolt your engine to your tranny then u can worry about the starter
there are only two starters
inline bolts or offset bolts
conveniently they coincide with the type of flywheel you use
153tooth flywheels use inline bolted starters
168 tooth flywheels use offset bolted starters

i hope this helps
