How deep do you want to get? Heads and cam or stick to bolt ons?

Pull out LO3, replace with ZZ4

If you really want to stick w/ the 305...
1. A good place to start is the exhaust. Get 1 5/8 shorty headers and a 3 inch catback. If you can where you live, lose the cat.
2. Either make a cold air intake (good luck finding a dual snorker cleaner housing) or flip the stock lid upside down. Voila, 360 degree breathing. Get a K&N filter of course.
3. Bump the timing up a few degrees

Just a few easy mods to start.

People are squeezing 300hp out of LO3s all over the place. Low 14s, high 13s.

Those TBI heads must go, however. They are the notorious swirl ports and are junk for performance. Grab any old set of 305 heads and port and polish them in your garage, according to the Standard Abrasives Deluxe kit instructions. Then enlarge the intake valve to 1.94" for another 10 hp

A Comp XR252 is good for a 305.

Hooker or Hedman shorty style headers, 3 inch intermediate pipe and dual exhaust muffler with 2 1/2" outlets.

An Edelbrock Performer intake with TBI adapter will work nice, too.

Finally, you'll need to have a chip burned to accomodate these mods but any speed shop can steer you straight there.

PS A 305 HO dual snorkle aircleaner is worth 1/4 second in the ET, so find one. Works perfect on a TBI.

These parts all work mucho goodie on a 350, too, when that time comes. That includes the heads

No.

If you want to ditch the TBI setup, then go carburetor. Much cheaper and easier to tune.

An HEI distributor (vacuum advance preferably, so you can ditch the computer altogether), a non-cc QJet carb, a dual plane intake manifold and a switch for engaging lockup in the torque converter.

If you want to remain computerized, try and find the entire carb setup from a 3rd gen--including the computer and carb.

Sitting Bull hit the nail on the head. The only things Ill add are that you'll need a posi rear with better gears, and if you want some power on the cheap side, the stock LT1 cam will work fine and can be had for under $50.

eBay.

GM sells them new for about $180. Compare that to $300 for a Comp roller

I still think the GM HT383 roller is perfect for your 305, though.

if i took and replaced the heads with cast iron TBI heads that are used on the 285HP 350 crate engine

would this increase my power?

No, but it is very small. Made for power under 3000 rpm and fuel economy. That's why they drop dead at 4000 rpm or so.
