2 leaky tranny questions

83z28 700 r4

1 how involved is changing the rear tranny seal becasue i think thats where im getting my slow leak from (it doesnt do it that much now that its cold tho but i just wanted to know)

2 when i changed my tranny filter and the gasket(cork from autozone) should i have used RTV on the gasket? is RTV the black goop stuff? should i always use it when replacing a gasket?

i can keep adding every once in a while but i am afraid that i will have trouble gauging how much i have lost over a period of time and not know how much to add back or that i will loose too much while driving and casue damage

Changing the tailshaft seal is not a big deal at all. Put the rear up on jackstands and take out the driveshaft. The seal will pry out of the tailshaft....use a hammer to GENTLY tap the new seal into place. Do your best to keep it straight and make sure it goes in all the way. Put the driveshaft back in and set her down.

Before you take the driveshaft out it's a good idea to check for play in the tailshaft bushing. Just grab the tailshaft yoke and see if it will wiggle up and down at all. If it does, you probably need to replace the bushing as well (which is a bit more difficult.)
