Are LT1 rebuild kits any different than standard 350 rebuild kits?

they cost around twice as much, but you will save that in gas savings

i am blow away by the amount of knowledge in this forum of lt1s and l98s,what i want to know is how did you guys learn so much about the tricks and secrets of the two engines, and where can i obtain this kind of info?i consider myself a decent tech with 4 yrs under my belt and plenty of schooling, but the one guy that talked about driling a hole in the lt1 intake to do away with the opti spark amazed me.where did you learn this trick?

Re: 300ish RWHP...L98 or LT1?

I don't know everything, in fact I know very little about LT1's other that what I've read on the boards.....

Which is in fact, where most of my knowledge comes from. I read alot, far more than I post, and thats saying something as I post pretty often. The trick to the boards is to find out what the general concensus is, who posts the most accurate info, and who doesn't know what the hell they are talking about.

The other way to learn alot, is to tear into your car, or start breaking stuff, then fix it. My experience with the 700r4 transmission comes from the latter. I've broken 3 of them now, torn apart 2 of them to see what went wrong, and rebuilt the 3rd to fix the other issues.

I'm online way too much. Seriously, everything I've learned about these engines is what I've learned from the internet, mostly this site, and working on my car myself. The only thing my car goes into the shop for is tires, anything else I do myself, or teach myself. I'm also only 22.

I myself have not drilled into the rear of the intake manifold, I've had no problems out of my opti in the 2+ years and nearly 60k miles that I've owned my car. However I have seen it done before, but it was on a mostly drag car. As far as getting rid of the opti, I would definitely recommend the coil pack method due to ease and probably similar cost after machining the rear of the intake to use a standard HEI distributor system. The coil pack system can be had as a kit (LTCC) or others, and uses the opti signal only for the spark timing.

As far as a rebuild kit goes, LT1's use the same rotating bottom end assembly as a SBC, pistons, rods, etc can be used, with one piece main and I think small journal crank also on the LT1, but don't quote me on that. The block can only be safely bored to about .060 over and crank up to 3.875 with clearancing. Although a small few have used longer stroke cranks and larger bores with more clearancing and block filler, but that gets into some real $ at that point. 396 (really 395 I believe) with 3.875 crank and .060 overbore is about the largest you can go without doing all of this, and IMO, is not much worth it over the 383.

Wonder which of the 2 motors I vote for?

I need a life.

I wasnt really expecting this to become a 3 page "bible" of L98 vs LT1, but its cool! I'm sure in the future there will be people looking for the same info, so the more info the better!
