305 TPI 5 Speed Cars?
#16
I remember looking for over a year to find a clean 5 spd tpi hard top, and wound up with a G92 and scammed the guy!! He never knew what he had. Its now a T56 cause the 5 spd broke, and the tremec didnt perform well either. Keep looking, they are around.

Yep, LB9 5-speeds do exist. I have one, drive it every day. Mine's an 88.
Mine has the WC T5 and so far so good. I run Mobil1 synthetic ATF in the damn thing.
I also have the 9-bolt 3.45 rear end but the posi doesn't work any more. I heard that if you use synthetic gear oil in the rear, without any posi additive, you might get some of the post back. Gotta try that this summer.

One thing that Willie failed to mention was that the 15-20% includes V6 cars. There are no official numbers for how many TPI 5-speeds there were, but I would expect that it's a percentage far below 15%. Pontiac kept better records than Chevy, and if you follow the breakdown of 5-speed GTAs you find that I'm talking out of my *** because the GTA sourcepage is down right now.
Anyway, all I can remember off the top of my head is 1988. I believer there were under 900 5-speed GTAs out of the total GTA production of 11,214. I believe that IROC TPI 5-speeds were similiarly rare. There were more IROCs than GTAs, but a lot of IROCs weren't TPI cars.
Oh, if you're willing to drive a little out of the way, I've got a 5 speed GTA that I'm going to have for sale soon.

I have a 1991 Z28 convertible with a 305tpi and 5sp. I bought it about 4 years ago with just over 100,000 miles on it. I have addedl headers and 3" exhaust system, K&N air filter, ECM chip, and have had the heads decked. I had to replace 2nd gear at about 135,00 miles. Thats not a bad deal because the 35,000 miles that I put on it were very hard driven miles. I have been very impressed with how my T-5 has held up. Replacing 2nd gear was a piece of cake. I did it in my own garage and took me about 5 hours to do with replacing clutch.

this post is older then ****, but i figured id chime in.....
just a little FYI...NOT all LB9 T-5 cars were the fast ones...Alot of them got 3.08's....only 164 cars in 91 got the G92 and LB9 (5 speed with 3.42's and L98 cam)
not many LB9 cars came with G92....like i said 164 in 91...there are ALOT more with the 3.08's
i have a 91 GTA....with G92, color and that fact that in the last 12 years im sure atleast 1/3 of them have either been stolen crushed torched or parted...so its more like 1 of 100 now...
man how friggin cool is it to own a car that only a 100 are still in existance...

I'll just add if whoever is looking for a car, from the GTAsource page is says, my 89 GTA with a 5 spd , L98 cam and 3.45 9 bolt rear was one of 166 in 1989.
Guess what I paid 3 grand for a car with broken tranny mount, no cruise, no heat or A/C, and marginal turn signals, crappy leather seats. The guy had a line waiting for this car too. (New York in spring 2000)
Personally I'd much rather buy a nice clean thirdgen with a straight body and perfect working electrical and replace all of the base model or performance drivetrain and suspension since it's all weak or worn out anyways, then have to deal with tracing down hacked up wiring harnesses and an abused torn up interior.

Maybe you should buy a 350 TPI, then change it over to a T-56 6 speed. You could go to a junkyard to get a T-56 and do it yourself, I'd bet it would cost less than a $1000. go to thirdgen.org and they have a writeup on changing it.

Yeah, I should've just stuck with my TBI car, it's not much slower and everything works great in it. (still have that one too), but I now have thousands in chassis/suspension invested into my electrical mess(GTA), as well as a brand new 350 engine. I guess at least in a few years if I still have the car I can say is a real GTA.
