350- buy retail rebuild, or do it myself??

Well, I think we have established that my factory 305 is one step away from whupped. Eventually, I want to upgrade to a 350. Here is my question. Can I rebuild a 350 cheaper than I can buy from any of the 'Zones'?

Option 1...cheap rebuilt motor from 'Zone'= 700 bucks.

Option 2...Get 350 from crazy neighbor for 100 bucks. Rebuild kit online for $200. Will I eat up another $400 on machine work? ( I know there is a WORLD of 'what ifs' here, but Im looking for everyones collective experience)

What y'all think?

(Please don't discredit a Yankee for saying Y'all.)

Re: 350- buy retail rebuild, or do it myself??

my elky has a crate 350 330 horse 380 tq. it was the delux and well worth the $3500 air cleaner to oil pan. it had everything but pullies and starter. I think scoggin had a 260 horse drop in with carb and distrib an all the trims for 1900. also I think the 350ci 250 horse long block goes for 1300. the rebuild has too many what ifs unless you are building something special.

Re: 350- buy retail rebuild, or do it myself??

I'm in the middle of a rebuild right now on my 95 Z lt1. Having a local guy rebuild the shortblock and sent my heads out to Lloyd for the LE2 treatment so I've got a vague idea on average pricing here in Syracuse...

Anyhow , rebuild kit and machining for $600 seems kinda tight.. I think machining and assembly would be more and you'll end up spending even more as you finish the job.. If money is an issue I'd look at a retail rebuild... same as what Sunsceamer suggested.

Hey mobleman!!!!!!!!

Which Lloyd are you talking about? The only one I know of works at Knis & Krick, or however you spell it. I used to deal with him quite a bit when I was the service manager at Performance Harley....

I can only budget about 1K for a new engine. The guys at Advanced told me they could get a base model 350 for 699 bucks. I dont want a 'screamer' of a 350, just something with a little more 'ooomph' than my 305.

Do you know anybody local who would sell me a set of used rear end gears?

(Sorry to ask SO many questions, but this car has me going in circles. If you are here in Cicero- Im just off Caudenhoy- Id like to meet with you at the local Wed night Home Depot show, before the snow shuts it all down....)

Let me know-Scott

Re: 350- buy retail rebuild, or do it myself??

Oops... Should have been more specific. Lloyd as in Lloyd Elliot in Tx (not local!)

Getting my small block work done by a gentleman down the road from me on Lakeshore.

I haven't had a chance to make it to the Wed. night show at HD this year yet (new baby girl at has been the apple of my eye and taking up most of my after work time)... However I've been meaning to swing by... could do it this week..

Don't know of anyone with a set of used gears, except for me possibly next year if I decide to go to 4.10s.

Know what you mean about going in circles.. heres mine:

Decided that after 160,000 miles, leaking head gasket and broken valve spring that I would pull the motor and freshen it up a bit...
