Well, lets see. The cam in that engine is fairly small, so a cam upgrade is $200-300. And it uses the Vortec heads, so you'll need to get them modified to handle a bigger cam, including springs, retainers, screw-in studs, and possibly machine work. Thats probably $200-300. And you'll need the Scoggin Dickey Vortec TPI intake manifold, thats $400. So your $1500 savings is actually only like $500-700 once you buy the odds and ends to go with it. And you'll need to buy the EGR kit to go with it, if you have emissions testing in your area. Good luck!

I just didn't have the heart to say that.

You want my opinion, bro? Good, here it is. REBUILD YOUR FRIGGIN BLOCK! I run mid 13's on mine. Its just a baby 355. nothing special at all about my motor. I haven't even ported my heads yet. I have spent $3000 on my car so far. Pics and specs in sig.

Don't take this as an insult. We are here to help and don't wanna see you spend more $$$ than you have to just to get where you wanna be.

Well it is like this.....My block is cracked from the piston breaking(nitrous does this sometimes)....Block no good. I would go with ZZ4 , but everyone says it is a "glorified L98"....I am porting out my TPI for now, but I will be going strealth ram in the near future. I know I could probably get a factory replacement and build it but...too much headache and not enough time( 2 cars for 2 working people ). Thanks for all your input and one more ?....What is the duration and specs on the L98 cam vs. HO cam????

Much better man. The cam is what its all about. My cam I attribute to 30 hp in my motor.

The factory L98 cam was 207*/213* .415"/.430" on a 117* LSA. I hope you are getting the ZZ3 cam or somthing comparable. Its #'s are 208*/221* .474"/.501". Sounds like a nice cam.

212/212 and .444/.444 ? That sounds like a flat-tappet cam, are you sure its a roller? And what about upgrading the springs? One of the mags just said the stock Vortec-head springs will not handle any lift above .420". Thats why that engine comes with a crappy cam.

And, those specs are for the 88-89 L98 cam. The 90-92 is something like 203/207 .413/.428 and 115 LSA.

Good luck!

JPrevost is running that engine with TBI and he trapped at 102 with the stock heads/cam that came with it. Definatlly not a sloutch, but if were me Id want more cam.

I asked a shop about doing the work to the vortec heads to make them handle a .500+ lift cam and they told me $120 including the price of the "Z28" spring.

This post just made my day

I just talked to the tech guy at SDP and he said that the cam that I am going with will definately work with the springs..here are the specs on both cams:

350 HO cam:

.435 / .460
212 / 222 Duration

SDP CAM:

.444 / .444
212 / 212 Duration @ 50
LS=122
Hydraulic

I hope this cam will give me the power I need to at least run with LS1's for a little bit

Dont pay extra money for that cam, its just about the exact same thing. Do yourself a favor and get the Vortecs worked on to accept a .525" cam, then put an LT4 hot cam in your car. It'll be a little more money but it'll be damn worth it.

Like a kid a week before Christmas.......The engine is on the way and I thank everyone here for the input and advice I received. SDP is A OK in my book and would recommend them to anyone. Jim Pace is a close second, but their tech guys aren't too smart. Intake is coming from Pace (SDP has them on Backorder) and the rest is SDP......GOD I CANNOT WAIT!!!!

Keep you posted

FYI you can't run the Stealthram on the there later unless they release a new version for Vortecs.

I don't like that cam they recommended to you at all. The Vortecs exhaust side is weaker compared to it's intake side, so they really, really like dual pattern cams. Unless I'm reading it wrong you downgraded the cam pretty stiffly IMO, as you stepped down the exhaust side of the cam where the Vortecs really needed the help.

BTW the stock Vortec springs will handle up to around .460-.470ish lift stock. I'm running the XE262 cam (218/224, .462/.469). Which BTW I upgraded to from a single pattern 218/218 dur .460/.460 cam and noticed a decent gain...

Summit has a great sale going on of the TPI runners from SLP. They're discontinued, and last I hard were selling for $180ish. Would be a good addition since the stock TPI stuff is going to be choking the HO motor...
