3RD gen shifter choice

I have an 87 IROC and would like to get a new shifter with the white **** on top like the B&M Prostick part # 80706. With this Summit says you have to get the aluminum 4 speed gate plate part # 80712. Why won't the factory one work? Does this shifter mount at about the same height as the factory shifter? I just want something that doesn't stick up real high and look aftermarket. If anyone has any pictures of a good setup please post them on the reply or e-mail me a picture.
I am also interested in the black **** style like the Hurst Pro-matic. It looks like it would sit up real high though. Any pictures would be appreciated

Re: 3RD gen shifter choice

I did a B&M Pro Stick with the 4 speed gate plate that you buy seperately and install with the supplied c clips. You just remove the stock shifter and cable, put a 2" spacer UNDER your new Pro Stick to get it at a near stock height, line it up with the plastic slotted top cover, and bolt it in the car with bolts or sheetmetal screws. I made a spacer for under the shifter out of 1-2" thick lexan but measure your own using wood to start with and see what height you like it at. The plastic top shifter plate will interfere slightly if your spacer is too high but it's plastic and can be massaged a bit with rotary tools. Running the front exit shifter cable was easy also, same with hookup. It's really worthwhile and took at most 1-2 hours.

Pic of above install. Not totally finished, but it shoes that the height is shorter than stock and it's fully functional from park to first gear. The letter selector panel is refinished and re-installed butnot sure what to do with the shifter slot.

Re: 3RD gen shifter choice

After seeing the Hurst dual gate shifter from Ringo234 I have decided to go with that one. It looks almost stock and has some cool functions. I got it through Summit and it was a little pricey at $240. But it will look great in the car. Thanks all. Here is the link to see it new. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
