700r4 vs. 383

my question is this, how much hp will a stock 700r4 survive, i plan on getting it built soon but i just got the engine rebuilt and cant do the tranny till i sell my other firebird. the 383 is going to put out apx. 400~hp so naturally im worried about it living with that kind of grunt running through it. any ideas on what a rebuild cost and how long the trans may survive?

My 700r4 lasted about 2 minutes behind my 406. It never really blew but I was easy on it. Flare ups between gears etc. I built the motor really mildly(I wish I put in a bigger cam) it puts down 305hp 405tq at the wheels.

well my 700r4 is in good condition so hopefully it will last until i rebuild it - if its putting down 400hp i know it wont hold up, but i will be keeping the stock intake and heads for now. I would assume im looking at numbers closer to stevem's, but it will be a high compression cammed, and headworked car so i guess time will tell.

god help me, that is sick power. what does it run in the quarter? i would assume with that much torque having ~300hp is irellevent, as low end power like that would seem to devour the track fairly quick.

on the dyno it did 14 but the tires were spinning on the dyno at the start and also the car has no top end.you can feel it slow at about 4500 but hopefully the HSR will take care of it

what kind of setup did you have built? as far as the stroker kit, heads, intake, cam etc.

I am in the process of building a 355 for my Camaro and the first thing that I did was to rebuild the stock 700r4 to be able to take 500 ft-lbs and 500 hp just to be on the safe side.

I had a '93 Z71 and after just a few mods to the engine (up to 280hp and about 380 ft-lbs) the tranny blew all to hell.

But the again I 'm not sure what tranny the Silverado had, besides 4WD.

yea i dont see the tranny holding up but with the stock intake, even with the cam and headwork i think it will be bottlenecked at roughly ~350hp but with 500+tq i dont think ill complain much.

Christ Stevem thats a mound of torque. That thing belongs in a tow truck. I think you need to get that intake on and a different cam. Anyway back to the question at hand. The tranny should hold up if its in good shape and you don't abuse it. If not start saving your money cause its a time bomb.

i have an eagle crank, ported and polished L98 heads, stock TPI,probe forged pistons and i forget the cam but i talked to a engine rebuilder shop and bought the one they suggested at the time.

i am gonna put on the HSR and a mega squirt with all new ignition(bought all new mallory ct pro series box, dist and coil) and dyno it then if i dont like the number i will cam it then.

I have a mild L98-based 383 in my 1990 Vette. The 700R4 has held up fine so far and I have been rather abusive... It's kind of a "luck of the draw" thing with 700R4s.

I could be wrong but I believe that the stock intake on an L98 will flow about 700 CFM at the max.
