Question 86 Z28 - Good deal?

Will probably pick up an 86 Z28 Friday. Just making sure that it is a good deal. It has only 76k miles, but been sitting for years cause of no title. Now I can get a title for $257. I am getting it for $900. The surface paint is all faided very badly, has surface rust, but is very solid. The under carriage looks almost new. No leaking of oil that I can see. The tires are dry rotted, may need new muffler, and cracked windshield. There is oil that someone has spilled in the back under the hatchback and some on the back seat floor, you can smeel it.

It is a 5 speed manual stick, which I really like. I drove it, and it feels like a new car, drives very solid and powerfull. Has a 4brl carb, 305ci. Probably get it anyhow, I just fell in love with it. Always wanted one, now since I'm and old fart, and so is the car, it's now very affordable! LOL. What ya all think?

I really like Chevy's. I used to have a 78 Buick Regal that had the 305 in it. I really liked it, even though I had to replace the soft cam. Does this year have any soft cam issues? Or any other huge issues? Thanks!

if its a ahrd top, I would take it and jsut build it up into a racecar and have it repainted, look for rust, if rust free, it's the way to be, lol

Yea, it's a hardtop. If it hadn't been sitting outside for years, it would probably be in mint shape. Looks new underneath. So, for a few ?'s. Guess I'll be here ask'n some ?'s while I do my restoration.

How much does a windshield cost? Anything special?

How the heck to I clean the oil soaked carpet in the rear? That's the only thing I can see that will suck.

By doing some research, doesn't seem like hardly any used 86's out there for sell. And if I have a H.O., that be worth some money, but I really don't think it is. I'm in the dog house again for this one, but what the hey? LOL

get a new carpet, and depending where you go, I've had quotes for windhsields for one car, not a camaro, from 250>500 bucks, 250 was at the dealership....... you may be able to get like a bissle or something and suck that crap out of the carpet, but i think you can get a brandy new carpet from nextgen/year one for under 300 bucks, and you may be able to find them even cheaper than that

To get the oil out of the carpet you will need to take the carpet out and take it to a coin car wash. Get a can of brake parts cleaner and spray the carpet down good. You will see the oil just run out of it...

Now spray the carpet with high pressure soap in an overlapping pattern so that you leave no portion of the carpet unsprayed.

Let it soak for a few minutes then go over it again with the high pressure rinse. Now go over to the car washes high powered vacuum cleaner and suck as much of the water out as possible.

Take the carpet home and spray it with Febreeze then let it sit out in the sun. It should turn out nicely if carpets not too bad.

LOL, as long as the car wash dude don't catch me. I got my own pressure wand for compressor, I think I may try that. I got a Bissel also, but probably ruin it on that crud.

How much gas mileage can I expect from this thing? 305ci, 5 spd stick, and I am not sure of the diff gears, but I would suspect it's stock 3.23. ?????

I was originally suposed to get a beater back up econo box, but I just cringe at the thought of driving a front wheel drive on bicycle wheels .

Looks like a good buy to me, since you can crank it and drive it. I priced a windshield in my area and it is going to cost $175.

305 4bbls differ on mileage. I get excellent mileage on the freeway. Once i got just shy of 300 miles on one tank, non stop cruising. But in the city, its nearly cut in half. Carbs are not good for stop and go. Just my .02 cents.

Thats a hell of a good find! Its a hardtop too which means you have a stronger foundation for big power

I would take out the 305 and sell it and put a nice healthy 350 in it. Possibly get rid of the 5 speed and put a T56 6 speed in its place.

Just some thoughts...

That looks like a sweet deal. I got my 86 Z28 for $600 with a L98 350 from an 86 Vette. The whole body is pretty shot, but it makes one hell of a sleeper being a supposed 305 car and looking like a tornado just hit it, hahaa. Good luck with it!
