89 IROC..Too much work for the price?

Ive been searching for a project car to work on. Really wanted a 91 z28 but they are a pain to find. <<--Im in love with the spoiler on Z's

Anyways there is a 89 IROC sitting next to this little mom and pop interior refurbishing place. I stopped bye to look at it because it obviously isnt one of the customers cars getting worked on at the shop.

Looking around it i notice that its got a straight body which is good. Only has 3 of the 4 iroc rims. , which really doesnt bother me since they are going anyways(if i got it). Has t-tops.

Those are the pluses i guess. The paint is faded(id repaint it either way though) it doesnt run. Dont really know the extent of whats wrong with it. It would need new weatherstriping, looks kinda "worn"

And the interior is kinda ****ty. I can fix the interior pretty quickly since my 94z28 is getting brand new everything on the interior. Seats carpet etc. So my old stuff could go in this one.

The old man there said $500 and i could trailer her home. Im thinking about offering him $400 just for the hell of it

BTW its an 350 w/ auto. Atleast i think its an auto(i looked at soo many damn cars the other day)

I want the project to be worth my time and effort, and i feel that for a few grand i could have a very nice toy.

Oh and i still have my original LT1 sitting in the garage. So if worse came to worse LT1 swap

What do you guys think. I ask you because you all spend all day around these cars. I know id sink $30K into my z without thinking twice. Just because its my baby, paid for, and she will rust before i sell her.

Personally, if the body's straight and she's not rusted out---I'd go for it. I'm obsessive/compulsive about buying these damn third generation F-Bodies, so my opinion probably isn't the best.

I'd say if you already have the damn LT1, do that swap right away. Most of the guys on this forum only dream of having a fourth generation LT1/LS1 under their hood.

If you really like the 91/92 body style... go to a junkyard. $150 and you could get the ground effects and the spoiler. You're repainting it anyways, right? So who cares if they're a different color.

If its worth it to you to put in the wrench time and get her all fixed up and fun to drive, then do it. But, third gen's ARE a lot of work as far as cars go, so you have to be prepared for that.

You've already got the interior. Most 14 year old cars need paint. Offer him $400, if he won't then just give him the $500. Is the motor an L98? If it is and you decide to put your LT1 in, let me know I'm looking for a 350TPI

We've got an L98 sitting here in Wisconsin out of a GTA... If you're interested, what would you be willing to pay? We've already got bidding started. She's been "freshly rebuilt", says the previous owner, but I would recommend doing a more thorough job. The car itself ran high 15's, sadly, with a failing transmission. Let me know if you're interested.

Well it all depends on how much your willing to do to the project car. If the frame is rust free, and the body is also rust/dent free (its funny i comment on that because in ontario rust is a big deal but not everywhere) as long as you understand that it needs a new engine (and possibly a new tranny doesnt sound like the cars been all that well taken care of) then go for it. You could relatively easily just gut the lt1 and trans plant it in the third gen. Motor and tranny are fairly universal so both of those could be swapped and youd have a nice lt1, 6 speed third gen. The only question for doing that swap is why would you want to take a perfectly good lt1 and swap it into the third gen. I personally think the third gens look better but all youve accomplished is basically changing the body panels. Id pick up the third gen. You can pick up a basically stock 350 for what a grand? and youd probably be good to go. Or if you want to go big and make a really powerful engine for her youd have to start to thinking about replacing the drive train. Either way for 500 bucks (id offer 350 and see what they say) youre not really taking all that big of a risk so id go for it.
