92 camaro starting problem
#16
Have they removed the ign cylinder to inspect those wires coming out of it? You gotta tear down the steering column to see, or check the resistance at the base of the column....orange wire sleeve with two very small white wires in it.

OK CHECK THIS OUT . i dont have a ground signal going to the anti theft relay. i have voltage but no output to the neutral saftey. if the anti theft relay is supplied with a ground the engine will crank but will not start.. no inj pulse.. says the pass key gets its ground from the ecm..which in turn supplies ground for the anti theft relay... says that the pass key failed 3 out of 4 test.. doesnt say what kind. and thats about it.. what would you all do now??? trade it ...put in the part and continue??? buy the 83 z with a 305 ho carb and swap parts from mine to that 1 ???

Ya know, I didn`t want to say this but, are you sure these guys know what thier doing? If they are ture auto techs, like myself, They will stand behind thier diagnosis of your problem and you won`t be out any $$ if thier wrong. That is the way we do it at my shop, If I call it an ECM and it doesn`t fix it, guess what? the customer isn`t buying it...IF THEY are sure, then THEY won`t be taking a risk by getting the pass moudule( which I metioned in a prevouis post that in my 14 years as an auto tech, have never had to swap one out)...(WHY SHOULD YOU PAY FOR THIER GAMBLING?) If they are uncertian of the problem and guessing, you need to find a good tech to fix your car...Man I hope it doesn`t turn out to be that key cylinder! The pass key, as I stated before uses resistance to allow spark, fuel and cranking, if it does not see the resistance (from the chip in your key) it won`t allow any of them. The starter enable relay can be by-passed easily with a paper clip, But the pass key module is what is suppoosed to "ground" that relay. getting it to crank by hot wireing the stater relay is really no different than what you did with a screwdriver in the begining. Getting the ecm to allow fuel and spark cannot be done with a paper clip, and there is the reason your car is sitting in that shop still

just measure the resistance of the resistor in your key with a volt meter, get a resister at radio shack, find the 2 thin (24 gauge, as I remember) yellow wires that run down the steering column, there is a white plug about 1/2 way down, unplug it, clip it off a few inches up (toward the steering wheel) from the connector and solder the resister to the plug, snap it in and see if it starts. I had to bypass mine after the leads in the dash broke twice. It worked just fine.
This may help prove or disprove your problem.
Good luck!

well took it to a real elec shop and they fixed it in like 4 hrs and charged half as much.. it was the wiring to the aint theft relay and yes it was the PASS KEY MODULE. starts up like you wouldnt believe. great on that part.... they did f*ck up my shifter cable adjustment. i have no 1st gear.<ill fix that> and my stero , rpm tach, and 1 speaker is all unhooked.. i was pretty pissed off. i went and gave them a piece of my mind and a nasty nasty power brake burn out in front of there shop . thanks for the help guys
