Bought crate 350, I need a timing pointer; options?

Hi,

I've got a 350 crate engine I bought from Scoggin Dickey. It did not come with a timing pointer. The old 305 I took out does have one. The old 305 has a 6 3/4" dampener, I have an 8" dampener for this new engine made by Precision Parts I believe (it was a cheap one). I really don't want to have to swap timing covers. Plus I think I have read somewhere that different balancers and engines use different positioned pointers?

What is my best option to get a timing pointer on this thing?

FWIW it's going into an '85 El Camino...but basically the same engine stuff as you guys.

Thanks!

I bought my engine from Scoggin. Here are some 8": http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...=KeywordSearch

EDIT: FULL LIST since it looks like the 8" also fit the 6.75"

What do they bolt to?

Also, this dampener already has hash marks on it, won't I just need a single point?

I see what your saying, so you just need this? It is part # SUM-163800 at Summit. It and a few other like this are under my EDIT link above on the first page for $24.95. I hope this is what you mean.
EDIT: I dont know what it bolts to

Thanks for the part #. I called up SDPC and they said this engine should have came with timing pointers. I went home and looked, they were in a baggie under the cardboard covering the lifter valley.

I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that I can just use the '0' mark on the "teeth" style pointer, and set timing from that according to the hash marks on the dampener?

Or, do I need to use the '0' mark on the dampener, and line that up to the teeth on the pointer?

I hope that makes sense...

Also, since the old engine didn't have one that was seperate, where does this bolt on to?
