Post Burned Valve?

What exactly is a burned valve? I kind of know what it is but not really sure. I'm assuming it's a gap between the valve and seat while in the closed position, but is it the valve that is bad? Would a valve job fix the problem? Or do you have to replace the valve, and do a valve job? Thanks.

The valve overheats and a piece of it burns off, leaving a huge compression leak. I've seen some so bad they looked like an outline of Texas. If the seat is ok, just needs a new valve and the seat reground.
