Lightbulb Buying camaro #3

I see a white 85' Z28 with T-tops, no dents!!! no A/C rough paint job , 2.5'' looking y pipe and Ilike it.
350 with stock every thing but the 600cfm vaccume secondary eldbrock carb(guy caned Q-jet for the eldbrock and adapter plate).
And an automatictransmission and wide open diff.
NO RPO codes.
So I think the engine is a pre L98 350 2 peace rear main seal, 2-bolt main cap, flat tap hyldralic lifters.
I think the trans is a th400 with the little stock torque converter.
The rear is a 10-bolt open with I think, 3.23 gears.
Any one know more about the old Z28?
Do tell.

Well I own a 85 Z28 the rear in my car is a 3:23 posi jack the rear of the car up and spin 1 tire if the other one goes the same way its a posi. also the suspetion is rock hard they handle like a dream. if its a th400 that would make a nice drag racing trans it didn`t come with that from the factory I think the 700R4 came fractroy. I say buy the car I love mine if you do buy it get HEADERS.

The guy says he has had the engine and trans rebuilt a year ago.
It probly does have the th400R4, I've stuck with standards till now.
If no one jumps in and buys it befor I do, I'll get it and can the stock intake mainfold for some thing like a open plentum, duel plain type and I would like to can the belt driven fan too for a eletric one.

Its also a 305 unless he's changed the engine and a th400 would not be stock. Derek

If you really want to know what type tranny is in the car you'll have to get under it. The shape of the "oil pan" of all things will tell you for sure. You can get a transmission Haynes manual from the autoparts store.

When I got my 88 the owner claimed it had a TH400. I soon found out it was a TH350. Since I had really been interested in the car to use the motor and tranny in the rebuild of my 67 GTO, that really sucked. I could still use the TH350 but I want either a 700R4 or a TH400. Either bullet proof or fuel economy. I haven't actually decided yet.

But I seriously doubt this one has a TH400 unless he's done a conversion on it. Not likely with a stock (305?) or even a stock looking 350. The TH400 would have been overkill.

I though that the 85' Z's were sold with carbed 350's and had a fuel injected 305 as an option.
Its a IROC Z28, I had forgoten untill I looked at it agine today.
For the engine I'll pull the heads and...
4.000'' bore
3.750'' bore
I'll get him to put it in writing and if its a 305 we'll go have a talk with our Comander, no court BS here.
If he don't want to see the comander I'll take back a little of the $$$ I gqve up for the car.

Just look behind the driver's side cylinder head for the casting number on the block. The is a website you can easily cross reference to find exactly what kind of motor it is and when it was made. I can't remember the sitename off the top of my head. Somebody else probably will though.

there was NO 350 available stock for the 85 camaros, the first year for the 350 in the 3rd gens was in the 86 IROC.

you can check here for all the info you need on what motors, trannies, and rear ends were available.

I doubt its a th400 cause that would require a different cross member, aftermarket torque arm, and I'm pretty sure some driveshaft work. They do make kits for fairly cheap to convert your existing A4 setup to work w/ a th350 but I haven't seen them for a th400.

I love both of my 85s I say jump on it and have some fun, just make sure you know what you're getting first

to the 3rd gen
