Cam install

Any of you who had a cam installed by a shop what did you pay?

im gonna go down to the local shop in about a week when i have about 600 dollars and get a cam installed, im not sure what kind of cam yet maybe lt-1...but im hoping the install wont cost more than about 250 dollars..

I need all the money i can get cause i want to save for new heads as well...

Thanks, Ron

I do my own cam installs.
If possible, can you have friends help you do the install then you can use that $600 or whats left of it after parts and supplies towards a set of heads.

Why not wait till you have heads and cams and do all at once. See if you can get a "cash price".

If you don't have someone who knows what to do standing by, I would suggest you not do it yourself.

ive heard a lot of different things from different people but does anyone know for sure if the cam swap can be done without unbolting the engine. if so how extensive is the procedure? do you recomend not doing it that way?

Motor stays in the bay, no need to unbolt the mounts.
Intake and distributor come off, valve covers come off, pushrods come out, lifters come out, timing cover comes off, radiator and A/C condenser come out, two bolts right in front of the hood latch that hold center vertical brace need to be removed and the brace moved over to the side a bit. Pull the cam out and replace with new cam.
Might as well change the timing set at the same time too.

Oh, and we did 2 cam swaps in the past 2 weeks, one on my brothers 96 Trans Am LT1 and one on my 95 LT1 in my 86 Trans Am.
