what he said except ive never drained the oil and dropped the pan...no need,just makes it easier for stuff to fall into it.
watch out when u take the fittings off the a/c condensor...it will prob. still have freon in it,dont breath it in.

Never heard of dropping the pan though? When dissassembling my L98, I took the timing cover off before the pan...I *think*

The timing cover has a lip that holds the front of the oilpan seal in place. You're supposed to loosen the pan before you take off the timing cover to keep from bending the lip.
I personally leave the pan tight.
