car wont start!
today i tired hooking up a sercuirty system that was in the car. There is some loose wires under the dash for the system, and i accidentally touched one of them to somethin and i saw sparks. Then i tried to turn the car on and i got nothing, not even a noise from the starter. All the lights and radio and stuff works it wont turn over tho, so i had to push start it to get it home. I stopped by a garage and he said its probably a fuseable link, i was just wondering where the fuseable links are on an 84 Z28. thanks a lot

You may have burned your starter switch that's mounted down on the steering column. You know the one that the long metal rod hooks to. Unplug the plug on it and put a jumper wire in the plug and see if it cranks up. Let us know if thats the problem.

no im not really sure, theres a ton of wires under there. I see where the steering column goes to the firewall and theres a long skinny plug with about 5-7 wires goin in each side, is it that or is it its own plug, and where would i get a jumper wire from, just a 12V source? thanks

Get a light and look on your steering column mainly on the left side. Look good and you should see a small skinny steel rod running down the column. When you turn your ignition key this rod is connected to the key cylinder right behind the steering wheel and it runs down the length of the column. Its hard to get to but it should be there. At the firewall end the rod makes a 90 degree turn up into the switch. When you turn your key the rod actually pulls the switch. The switch is held down to the steering column with 2 small screws and has a plug on it with 2 wires coming out of the plug. Unplug the plug and get a paper clip or a small piece of wire and bend it in the shape of a horse shoe and push it into the plug touching the 2 prongs in the plug, then see if it will crank. If it does youve burned up the little switch. Like I said its hard to get to especially in a Camaro. When you turn your key you can actually see this rod move up and down the column. Hope this helps. If this is the problem you'll see the spot on the underside of the switch where the rod goes in after you get the switch off. Then it'll be a little more clear what I' talking about.
