Re: Carbed 305 in 89 RS

I'm looking at the pic in the JET websight....it looks like a oil pressure sending unit in the kit as well?? and the wiring plug utilizes 3 of the 4 termanals,...if I knew what the plug on the tranny needs to operate...I think it'd be simple to make.......so....you say you are running the 700r un-hooked now....hows it run(other than dieing when it shifts to second) ....do you think this is causing it....????

the thing that looks like an oil sending unit is the vacuum solenoid. you guys don't need the whole kit, keep searching because you don't need the stuff that goes inside the transmission because it's already there

this is the parts you need. I don't know the part number of the vacuum solenoid but they were factory parts on the carbureted cars with TC lockup so it's readily available at parts stores and you should already have the plug tht goes into the transmission.

oh and the other thing is a brake light switch, when you hit the brakes the TC unlocks but the good part is your brake light switch already has it so really all you need is the vacuum solenoid (or whatever it's called)

the solenoid by itself

everybody claims that running a 700r without the torque converter locking up in 4th gear will quickly burn it up, I emailed TCI a couple of years ago and they responded back saying that without it locking up that it will burn up 4th gear and I needed to buy their kit to fix this problem, it sounded like a sales pitch to me so I just ran it to see if it was true. Needless to say after maybe 1000 miles it stopped shifting to 4th, I don't know if it was because of the lockup or not because I was running a good bit of power through it and driving it real hard and 700r's 4th gear don't take a lot of abuse so I'm not really sure why it went out.

Just a heads up that it may not be healthy to run your 700r without the lockup engaging in 4th gear

Re: Carbed 305 in 89 RS

search the web for like "torque converter lockup override," all that plug is, is two wires, apply a voltage and it'll lock,

there's a monte carlo site that goes over the hooking up of a 3 way switch, to enable, disable and run it stock...

BUT DON'T!!!!! just leave that plug out, it'll knock a lot of life out of that tranny, those lockup transmissions run HOT unlocked. and besides you'll lose a couple mpg.

^as he said^ this will burn up gears top, down. Think of it like a manual transmission, it's designed to run 1-1 from the engine, if you never completely let off the clutch in a manual, you never run 1-1 and you burn the $#@& out of the clutch quick. In an auto fluid runs through the converter, which is burning up because it's designed to lock, but can't, the hotter than normal fluid doesnt cool the rest of the transmission as well, and this is all happening primarily on the highway cruising long distances... hence OD is first. Then if your transmission is designed right, it'll lock at steady speed, and unlock for acceleration. so you'll burn gears whenever cruising

ALL THAT MEANS IF YOU DONT WANT TO USE LOCKUP, BUY AN OLDER TRANSMISSION

Re: Carbed 305 in 89 RS

good advise/info.....thanx.....so, if we get the 700r to lock up in 4th by appling voltage...then enable the brakelight switch or by loosing enough vaccume by slowing down to unlock it.... we're good to go....?? I guess by applying voltage to a certain pin in the 4 pin plug (by the brakelightswithc/vaccume solinoid)makes it kick out as well???

Re: Carbed 305 in 89 RS

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try to keep the PCM hooked to the lockup and see if it'll work even though none of the sensors are hooked up. As for burning up a 700R4 without the lockup......they'll burn up anyways
