Carbed Engine ??s

OK, on my 305 i have a eelbrock 600 might be a 650 cfm carb 1460 is the number on the carb. anyways theres no throttle return spring. Am I right when assuming that having that missing is whats causing the engine to die when i put it under a load and give it gas. Is it flooding the engine cause theres no return spring?

That spring may be the cause of the problem. i would try either getting that spring and seeing if that fixes the problem or just rebuilding the carb... I dont know much about carbs... but I would remove the carb and take a beter look at it...

NO thorottle return spring? It probably won't flood the engine, but it can make for one WILD ride the first time out of the driveway!

A picture would be worth a thousand words here. There MUST be some way of positively returning the throttle to it's curb idle position. I've seen worn out throttle shaft bushings cause binding and I've seen return springs that have the wrong type of leverage on the throttle arm to do their job properly but NO return spring at all is definitely in the realm of "scary."

throttle return spring is most likely not the problem, its the carb itself or its a fuel/spark problem. Put a throttle return spring on it ASAP as it is dangerous and could get stuck WOT without one..not good. then start with the things that dont cost any money to check..make sure all the plug wires are on tight, and hook a timing light up to it and make sure its timed properly. then move on and check the plugs and replace if needed. Next try changing the fuel filter. Lastly if everything else checks out good and you still have problems, if you feel confident enough grab a how-to book and a rebuild kit from your parts store and go to work on the carb, or take and have it rebuilt. If the motor is going to see any real performance, drop the crappy edelbrock and go for a holley, you can get used rebuilt ones on racingjunk.com for about 125 bucks a standard 600 or 650 should be fine let us know what you come up with!
