Choke and Voltage Drain

Choke and Voltage Drain
I had mentioned on this board before that my choke light was coming on at seemingly random times while the motor was running, though I wasn't seeing any performance problems or anything "odd" about the car running.
Now that I have the motor tuned and running legally, in terms of emissions, I have now noticed that when the choke light comes on (typically at speed, rarely at idle) the voltmeter also drops from 13 - 15 volts down to 12 - 10. If it's nighttime, the drop in volts dims the dash lights and headlights.
I'm totally confused on what could be causing this. The motor runs strong, even when the choke light illuminates there is no change in RPM, power, or sound yet the voltage drops like this.
I have the Edelbrock 1406 carb with an electric choke. Could it be an electrical issue that tries to engage the choke, thus lighting the light and drawing electrical power from the battery/alternator?
Also, since I do have an aftermarket carb, is the dash light even useful anymore? Could this just be a short that the wiring from the light to the old carb's choke is grounding out because it isn't hooked up, illuminating the light?

Re: Choke and Voltage Drain
The wire to this is a good size, I believe 12ga. If it's shorting you will definately have problems. There should be a coke relay in line also. Should be a fuse that you could pull if your not using the choke.
