Combo estimate hp an cam selections
hey guys my motor is gonna be done rather soon.(next couple of weeks) i wanna see what you guys think about my combo an how much hp youll think ill get
383.. steel crank rods.. not positive on the brand used its either scat or eagle with arps holding them together
speed pro forged... should be about 11-1
edlebrock performer heads..(port job) dont know how much more cfms ill be gettin its just a basic job
somewhere around 550 lift cam.. has not been decided yet
super victor intake
holley 750 double pumper
hedman long tubes 1 5/8s
if you guys can help on cam selection that would be awesome... this is not a daily driver.. i dont care about gas millage... doesnt have to be real streetable... has to have a big lopie idle... an i dont know if a turbo 400 changes any cam selecting..

Re: Combo estimate hp an cam selections
I have a book about chevy small block valvetrains, and they make around 500hp on an HR282XR from Comp Cams (230/236 .544/.554 110 LSA with 1.6). That is with out of the box TFS 215cc heads though, if you don't care about streetability then why not go with a bigger cam like 242/248 or just go solid roller? With 300cfm heads you'll be getting 500+fwhp all day with a 383 and huge cams. You also might want to go with 1 3/4" headers, and some people like to widen the powerband by decreasing the LSA with 3 speed transmissions. When I say decreasing I mean decreasing the overlap, increasing the "LSA number".

By the way I am just a novice, I don't actually know that much just what I read in all my engine building books and on the internet, so don't take what I say too seriously.

That is what I'd call a "big ****" cam. It'll be a pretty high RPM cam though, it is best to get your heads flowed and accurately match a cam to it.

forget the big cam, a lopey idle is just the engine missfiring. If you start messing with big cams you better be ready to rebuild your car one peice at a time as it breaks. I'd stick with a smaller cam and instead tune the carb and ignition. there's a ****load of things you can do to your engine that wont cost much and will make it gain power.

Re: Combo estimate hp an cam selections
tell me more about your engine. Is it drilled to redirect oil flow and coolant flow? Does it have a crank scaper and windage tray? How much oil do you run in it when you race it? Is the crank turned under any? What size are the rods, stock or long? Is the cam retarded? What size rocker arms?

oh, then I guess everything is stock. Yor problem is you're worrying about what kinda cam to put in it and not caring how its being built. When it comes to engine building the smallest details are the most important. A race prepped blue printed engine with a stockish cam is alot better then a stock engine with a big cam.
