Converting to Fuel Injection

Hi, my brother has a 1984 Camaro z28 he bought off the board with
a t-56 and a 350 bored 40 over with ported protopline vortec heads
and a comp cams xtreme energy 240/246 cam with a performer rpm
intake and a Holley 750. I drive the car quite frequently and I'm
constantly with him trying to tinker with it to get the last bit of
speed out of it.

First off, the car has some minor drivability issues which are rather
annoying with the carb. The cam might be a tad big for this setup,
IMHO. But the car really pulls like a raped ape past 6000 which it did
not with the previous xtreme energy 274h cam that was in. Thats not
my only gripe, however, as its not that bad. The main thing is the
constant tinkering it requires to keep it in good running condition.
And no matter how much you mess with it, at least one point in the
powerband is always either running too rich or too lean. Its never
a perfect delivery all the way up to the 6500 rpm shift points. The
gas milage is also sub par because any W.O.T. runs on a tank of
gas will leave an average of 3-5mpg. Cruising in 6th gear on the
highway and keeping your foot completely out of it still only results
in ~12mpg. I'm a stickler for precision, and efficiency.. I also like
just tuning the car on a dyno once and leaving it alone.. Seems with
the carb your out at least once a week tinkering with it because it
doesn't seem to run as perfect as it did the day before.

What kind of Fuel Injection solutions are there? I'm not too big on
TPI due to the intake. However, he is on a budget. No $3000
systems here.. Any help is greatly appreciated!

The best system out there for your budget would be teh Stealth Ram.

But your gas milage numbers seem low to me. What kinda carb ar eyou running exactly. And you shouldnt have to tinker with it all that often. Perhaps try to swtich to a differnt carb before you go through an FI swap.

Also try a little smaller. I think a 650 Holley Street Avenger might work well.

Thanks alot for the info. It is $2289 for the setup in Summit. Although it really seems like a sweet setup. I'm not sure if I, or my brother, would be willing to spend that kind of cash to go FI in the near future. I'd much rather go with the trying a new carb route, and if that doesn't work then look into it! I was hoping for the ~$1500 or less range. Which I suppose is lowballing it due to the need for injectors, throttlebody, intake, computer, software, cables, etc. it gets pretty expensive. Is it possible to use a modified factory setup such as the LT1? If not I'm sure some used kits sell for significantly cheaper.. But maybe we can work with what we have, or get a carb setup that will work for much cheaper..

The carb is a Holley dual feed 750. It seems to either always run too rich, or too lean.. The main problem is it either idles rich, and is too lean up top.. or it is too rich up top and idles lean.. or idles lean and runs lean, idles rich and runs rich.. its never a perfect combination no matter how much I tinker. And if I advance the timing a degree or two, or retard it a degree or two, etc.. I end up having to go f'n with the carb again because it will be out of whack. I'm sure an expert could set it up. However, I used to own a carb'd v8 s-10 and I only messed with it like once in 2 years. It was pretty much spot on right out of the box. This is what frustrates me.

How can you tell about how much carb you should need for a particular setup?

Thanks for your advice, its really appreciated..

That set-up is only that much if you need everything with it. Thats why I said get a regular TPi harness and all first. If you only buy the intake, plenum, throttle body, and fuel rail, I think you will come in around $700 for the Stealth Ram. Then you can probbaly find some nice injectors on this site for sale to go with it.

As for the carb, I dont know a paricular formula to tell how much carb to use. I genrally take it from what other people are being succesful with. I would say you would be ust fine with a 600 or 650.

I second the Stealth Ram. I'll be getting one of those eventually for my 88 formula.
Just look for a used TPI setup, buy that and sell the intake, runners, and plenum. Keep all the sensors, distributor, harness & ecm, and throttlebody and put them on the stealth ram.

Should be able to complete the swap for less than $1000, plus you can sell all the carb stuff too.

I did the carb to TPI swap on my 86 Trans Am back in 2001/2002.
