Re: Could I have a chance against this car?

Why does everyone keep saying there isn't much done to his car? He has quite a nice list if I do say so myself. The hopped up tranny is what's gonna save you if anything. BUT.. since you now say that you have NEVER raced your car before and have always babied it, then I am leaning towards no. If you cant drive it, you can't win it.

Re: Could I have a chance against this car?

I never raced my TA before, but I have raced my previos birds (89 Formy with similar mods) I do have some experience. The race would more than likely be a stoplight war, mayber no more than an 1/8 or possibly a 1/4 mile. The 350 is out of the question right now due to lack of work space and Dutch customs issues. A cam and a swap to a 3.23 or 3.45 rear end is feasible. Which cam and gear combo would you fellas suggest with my current mods list?

An LT1 cam would be a nice step up in performance, even more so if you had access to a custom tune for your car. They can be found for $30-50 with low milage.

Re: Could I have a chance against this car?

The only thing you've got done power wise is exhaust and runners.

Now for the negatives:

1. Its a GTA.
2. Its a 305.
3. Its a peanut cammed 305.
4. You've got 2.73s right?
5. Stereo weight.

You would need a better cammed 305, in a lighter weight car, with better gears and no stereo equipment to think about beating this Mustang with those mods. You: mid 15s. Him: low 14s. Night and day.

Unless the Mustang guy does something really dumb, you have no chance. He might even still take you missing a shift or leaving the traction control on...

And about the torque issue - those 99+ GTs get up and go well for a 260 HP small V8. It's after the sprint to 60 that they fall off.

The thing you forget though is that the 305TPI engine got the same exact cam as the 350TPI engine, and by no means is as much of a peanut-cam as the stock one in an LG4

Most of the newer mustangs are junk. I myslef have a 91 Camaro rs with the best custom job ever. 5.7 TPI with 5 speed, posy rear, campation cams, accel igintion system, edelbrock headers, and sweet *** daul exhaust. My car beets the heck out of anthing and I bet your firebird would do the same. My moneys on you.

Yep.

I want you to win - but I suspect that the Mustang will...

Re: Could I have a chance against this car?

By late June , mid July i am hoping to have a 3.45 rear end and the LT1 cam installed with a custom prom. That should put us about even. To date what would you guys say i'm putting to the wheels about 215-225 rwhp?

The 305 TPI only got the same cam as the 350 TPI if the 305 was a stick in the earlier years. In 88 or 89, you had to specify the 350 cam, it was no longer standard on the manual trannies. I'm willing to bet that his later model auto has the peanut cam.

Re: Could I have a chance against this car?

I say your putting down less that what you think. I have the LT1 cam in mine and dyno shows that Im only putting down 225 rwhp. but my 1/4 times and dynos dont match so who knows what Im actually putting down.

Not true. The 85 LB9 and the 87 and later manual trans only G92 LB9s got the better cam. All other got a variation of the "peanut cam", found in LG4s, LB9s, and LO3s. And the cam is the sole reason for the up to 25HP difference in factory ratings.

lil305gta - Currently you're be doing well to put down 200 to the wheels. Most likely you'd see around 190rwhp if you ran it. And there are MUCH better cams out there than the LT1 cam. That's for poor people only

Thumbs up Re: Could I have a chance against this car?

I say go for it.........Being the underdog makes it that much more fun - work on your launches and shifting-get to know your motor and how to run it. He may be stronger when comparing numbers but I have beat even smoked would-be faster cars cause I know my car and how to drive it, they didn't.........you make it sound like he doesn't, so use that to your advantage!

Re: Could I have a chance against this car?

no matter what cam you stick in there stock 305 heads will not give you the flow you need, those stock heads are the biggest limiting factor on the engine. even the stock vortec heads can do alot for a 305, though the market for them right now is a ripoff. i can't find a crappy pair of L31 heads for less than $600 a pair anywhere.
