EGR worth it?
Exhaust Gas Recirculation...why do we need it. i heard to warm the motor up quicker. with all that hot air goin right back in the motor wont it restrict some HP? is there anyway to take it off?

u dont need it,i have mine blocked off on my 87 IROC b/c it went bad. if u block it of,it might ot might not trip the service engine soon light. its pretty much pointless to me,thats y i didnt replace it.

At cruise it circulates a measured amount of exhaust gasses back into the intake charge to reduce the cylinder temps thereby reducing NOx. EGR is not active at idle (the engine wouldn't idle smoothly) nor at WOT (power loss). In reality, if it is functioning properly, it probably doesn't cost any power. As for looks, my Z with TPI you don't even see it so, I don't care if it is there or not. I've heard that the LT4 engines did away with EGR due to the overlap designed into the LT4 hotcam.

egr valves are actually good the help cool cylinder and reduce emissions.some people say they are bad and cause less hp but those are the same people that dont like fuel injection because "you can get more power from a carb"

The EGR does reduce emissions and cool combustion chamber temps. Another thing that the EGR does (and is often over-looked) is that it reduces the need for higher octane fuel (assuming properly operating EGR)! Think about that the next time you block one off...

Oxides of nitrogen (NOx), when combined with oxygen forms nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and further mixes in the atmosphere with unburned hydrocarbons (HC) causing smog in the presence of sunlight.
