explain gears to me

You also might not gain anything, your engine has to be able to take advantage of the extra RPM, I've seen guys with stock engines install 3.73's or lower and actually go slower at the track, but it (feels) quicker off the line. You have to research and get the package right.

Gears don't add or take away torque. The motor puts out X hp/tq and will still put out X hp/tq. It will, like angel said, just let the car rev quicker. Thus, like Kevin said, go through the gears quicker.
You will probably pick up a few tenths seeing your car isn't too mod'ed. Highway--all you'll see is more RPM. I can't comment on top speed or 50mph rolls without knowing what RPM you'll be turning (I know there's a calculator for that on TGO but I'm lazy ). Figure if it puts you in your powerband...you're good to go

I went from 3.08's to 3.73's and honestly It looked faster watching the tachometer but 1/4 mile wise it was no more than a 1/10th quicker. The stock cam/head setup really killed upper rpm power even after going to a carb intake which is supposed to be good well past 5500rpm.
Like a hot chick...she's just gotta have the whole package or she just sucks.

exactly aklim, but i figure before making a massive engine, make everything be able to handle it first. after this spring my rear will be almost bullet proof. next spring is my tranny rebuild with higher stall converter and shift kit. then will drop heads cam and steath ram in all at once and will also have piece of mind that the rest of the componets can handle this engine.

Sounds like a plan to me unless the engine takes a dump first then you might as well do it all at once. Before you do the heads and cam, make sure it is not problematic. Make sure you get good oil pressure or it is a sign of bad bearings. Make sure the leakdown test is good otherwise you might need other work. You don't want to spend money with the heads and cam only to find out 2 weeks later that the engine is shot.

My Stock L98 92 z28 picked up 4 tenths switching from 3.23s to 3.73s with no other Mods. I used the same tires (BFG D/Rs) and my 60' went from 1.96 to 1.815. The steeper gear will make it quicker if you can hook it up.
