Lightbulb Fuel Gauge Acting Weird

Alright, lately(in the last few weeks). I've noticed that my gas gauge has just about stopped working. When the tank is filled up, the gauge only goes to half at most, sometimes jumping to full and going back down. Most of the time if that tank is anything but full the needle sticks at 1/4 untill the tank is at 1/4 and then it works like normal. This is weird to me because I've never seen anything like that. We were thinking the sender has just gone bad, but from what I've read that thing is so hard to get to that it's easier just to replace the whole gas tank...which brings another problem of actually finding a gas tank to begin with...Any ideas?

Getting ahead of ourselves, aren't we? Have you determined that the sender is bad? Buy a new sender and do a resistance check to see whether the gauge works. Hook up the new sender to the wiring and see if the needle moves properly. If it does then it is the sender. If not, it is the gauge

The sender is in the gas tank. If you are replacing the gas tank, I would get a new Walbro pump and strap that onto the sender and replace go with that. That is unless you find rust in the tank. www.gastanks.com or http://discountgastanks.com have it. Get the straps. No telling if you have to cut yours off because they are so rusted in.
