Exclamation Gas smell and Tach Problem...need help!

sometimes, and it's usually when the air is off, i can smell gas comming from my car. i can't tell if it's inside or out, but i think its from outside the car. my mpg sucks too... either that, or my guage is retarded. 10 bucks of 93 octane (1.89$ a gal) and it wasted in like 40 miles or something close to that... my friend said it could either be that i blew a gasket, my fuel injector(s) is/are leaking, im running REALLY rich, or that my cats aren't working right and thats why they smell like gas

im going to fill the tank up tomorrow and see how many miles i get on half a tank.... ill let you know my mpg without beating on the car. i dont really know what it does cuz i just got the car a few days ago, but it seems like all the bugs are comming out of the car now. just replaced the alternator cuz the damn thing kept sucking my battery dry and leaving me stranded in the middle of the street having to wave ppl down to jump start my car. the tach revs past 7 when im on WOT, and THEN shifts (happens in every gear). ac compressor makes a clacking noise and my neighbor said i need to replace the clutch in the compressor (he said he'd do it for me free since he's known me for about 15 years).... and the damn radiator was overheating (but i fixed that, as well as the alternator). if anyone's got any suggestions on whats going on with my tach, let me know... it idles pretty high too, at around 1500 rpms (atleast thats what the tach reads).... would a shift kit help? thanks guys

Usual suspects would be leaking hoses. Spray brake cleaner on the hoses and if your rpm goes up, you have a vacuum leak. Have you done the tune up lately? Plugs cap rotor wires?

I'd spray all of them, one at a time. You never know which hose it could be that is cracked. Also before you put the plugs on, take a new one out of the box and ground the threaded end and stick the other into the boot and start the car. Rev it a little and you should see a blue spark. If not, your coil is weak.

If the gas smell doesn't come from under the hood, it might be a leaky gas tank. Look under the car when you fill it up to the top and park it. See if it leaks then. Leave for a little while and see if it leaks. Finally leave it overnight and see if it leaks

park it on an incline if u can so the nose of the car is more up that the rear. also, while the car is running, check the fuel filter and make sure its not leaking.

DJ, the fuel pump is in the tank. I don't see how a leaky fuel pump can be detected by you or anyone.

ill just ask the guy tomorrow when i go pick up my car what could be causing the gas smell. if it's the fuel filter, then i got a solution for that - i bought myself a new fuel filter 2 days ago cuz i think the one on my car is 13 years old, lmao, just havn't had time to replace it yet.

and yeah... i guess your right that it's not the fuel pump, lol, dunno what i was thinking

Also check the fuel vapor return cannister, sometimes that goes bad or the hoses going to them get cracks in them.It is located on the driver's side of your car,it is black and about the size of a coffee can.

See if they have a dye for gasoline. Dump it in the tank and fill it up then go with a blacklight under the car. That might save a lot of aggrevation. If it leaks from the fuel filter, it probably is from the ends unless you pierced the filter which I doubt because you'd see it.
