Is This a Good Price for a 383?

$2200

Fully assembled
350 4 main block
Performer Intake
480/230 cam
GM Crank and 2.02 1.60 heads
ARP bolts
a bunch of other stuff that I cannot remember.

Doesn't include carb, distributer, and accessories from old engine.

This is the jest of what my friend told me the local engine guy quoted him for this engine for his 86 TA. The guy said at least 410 horses out of it at the crank minimum. What do you all think?

I don't believei it is. He mentioned something about not running nitrous on it. I will check and see. Does anyone think 410-450 is too much hp for this setup?

It lists it up top, but 230/480 on the cam, and normal GM 2.02 1.60 heads.

I meant casting numbers for the heads, you can stick 2.02/1.60 valves into just about any SBC head, but that doesn't mean it will perform well. And as far as the cam, going by those numbers, I'm going to assume it's a single pattern cam with 230 degrees intake/exhaust and .480" lift.

Sorry, I misunderstood. I don't have the casting numbers. I have seen the sheet the guy gave my friend, and it just gave those numbers. They are GM heads, but that is all I know. For the cam, I believe that might be on a 110 LSA also, and you are right for those numbers.

for only a .488 lift cam,i dont see 410 HP w/ some GM heads. it might have Vortec heads (great street head) but that small cam wont push it to 410 i dont think. ask him for a dyno sheet.

must not be a forged crank or even hyper pistons. if it is a 4340 crank that would be a great price for the shortblock alone and if he used at least hyper pistons too that would be a steal if it worked right.

gm's 4340 383 shortblock fully assembled is 3400 which uses the forged crank and hyper pistons just to give you an idea.

It is a good price for a 383. Whether that is a good 383 or not, I doubt it personally, remains to be seen. Pretty low lift cam, IMO, for that kinda power it is supposed to make.

AS for that cam, i had a 490 lift cam with similar duration in my 388 stroker and i only dynoed 319 RWHP! That is using AFR heads and a 750 Demon carb on top of a Performer RPM air-gap manifold. CR around 10:1. That was an OK number for me since i did make 486 Ft Lbs of TQ!!!! With the 480 lift cam i had the first time (flattened #1 intake lobe) i ran low 13's in my RS. Not too sure where 400HP is being figured into this motor?

P.S. i was only using GM rods and crank, but forged TRW pistons.

In summary, if you cannot get it independently verified by an independent dyno, assume that figure is inflated.

Complete specs:
GM 2.02 1.60 Heads (not Vortech)
480/230 cam
4 bolt main 350 block with nodular caps
Roller Tip Rockers
Hypertech Pistons
Molly Rings
GM 400 Crank

Edelbrock Performer Intake
Balanced with ARP Bolts
It is not forged
$2200 for everything

He would be adding a Demon 625 carb.
