How does 1* of timing matter?

2* of timing is worth 2mph in my car (from 108 to 110), which is aprox. 20 rwhp.

You might want to consider running a cam with a little more overlap to bleed off the low rpm cylinder pressure, which would help with your detenation problem. The less load you put on it under 3000 rpm the better, so consider a stall convertor above 3000. 10.7 is REALLY pushing it for an iron headed motor on 93 octane.
