I hate 305 bashers!!!!!!!!
This is the first time I think I have ever vented on this board! I get sick of people with 350 or bigger always telling us 305 guys when we have questions to just get a 350!!! I have one of each and still get tired of hearing it!!! Shove it!!!!!

You're just jealous cause you have a whimpy little 305. Oh, wait, so do I They are decent little small blocks. I'm having a blast with mine. I could have put anything I wanted in my 88, but decided to go with the 305 for now just because it's fun getting the most out of what you have. Eventually I'll be putting the ZZ4 from my Chevelle in the 88, and going with a big block in the velle. I'll be doing some 350 bashing then. There's always someone who needs to put down anything they perceive as lesser than what they have, only because they are insecure tittie bottle suckers.

As much as I hate to say it, it really is just an exercise in futility. The only reason Im doing it is because Im stupid and enjoy having the original block in the car, and I just enjoy the uphill battle I guess. I want to see what the limits of the 305 tbi are. Only a few people have done a nice heads, cam, intake, nitrous on the setup and to my knowledge none of them have track times, and if they do they dont poste them. If I like what I get I'll keep it, if not I'll figure out where to go from there. If someone was serious about making power I'd steer them twards a 350+

when i got my 96 iroc, it ahd the 305 tpi... i thought the 305 was a good engine. but then i put a 350 in it. to me there was just so much more tq and better responce. *the 350 only had like 250 Hp and 350 tq* and now with my 406, i realize the 305 is an OK engine, but im glad i didnt start to modify it. cause its a loosing battle. honestly.. jsut get a 350/383 if u r looking to make mad power. if u want somethign to cruize in. keep the 305. im not bashing.. im just telling u my experiance with the 305

305's suck.....................
gas that is when you build them, although just about anything will then! although, personally unless you plan to dump money into modifying your car you should have accepted that a 305 isn't as fast as a 350.
but to all those who want to mod them more power to you.

Follow the parts in my sig. They will all work fine on a 350 when that day rolls around. They produce a solid one hp/ci on a 305 and will also let you hit 350 hp on a 350, too, as long as you step up a notch on the cam
This setup purrs like a kitten as a daily driver, gets 16 mpg around (my VERY hilly) town, 25 mpg on the highway and will run mid-14s in the quarter mile. On a 350 it will have you in the 13s--no problemo. And it ought to last as long as any factory Camaro, so you can't beat that with a stick

I was leaning more towards the fact that when some 305 guy asks for performance upgrades or the sort, there are always people that take the time to down them for having a 305, but don't take the time to actually suggest upgrades...I haven't seen as much here as I do at www.thirdgen.org. I mean it's a 5.0! I bet that all those mustang guys don't say "well just get a 351", do they? No...sorry just gets on my nerves when someone logs in just to tell you to get a 350, duh, if I had the time and money I WOULD!!! And I do have BOTH, just ranting here

It's been proven over and over again that if you have a good 305 that doesn't need shortblock work, it is actually cheaper to build it up with all the juicey parts that transfer over to a 350, when that day comes around.
In the interim, your built 305 will wail on almost any stock or mild 350

It's not that we're a bunch of 305 haters, it's just that we realize that beyond a certain point, 305 mods are approach a point of diminishing returns. If somebody wants headers and a cam that's one thing, but as soon as people start talking about a stroker kit and $$$ heads, that's when the 350 comments usually come up. When you start getting into internal mods or any kind of a rebuild, that's when you really need to consider what you want. Rebuilding a 350 is CHEAPER than a 305, so even if you need to pay a few bucks for a good block, you wind up breaking even. Unless you're a stock freak, I see no reason to pay as much for a 305 vs a 350. I also consider it equally pointless to **** big money into modding the 305 when you could use that money on a 350. Does that mean that headers and a cam is a waste of money? Of course not... but spending $2k+ on mods is to me.

I really thought the 305(lb9) in my car was awesome for a factory motor in 87. Especially with the T5. Problem is when you start looking past the no brainer mods like cam, headers and such there doesn't seam to be as much of a market. I know porting the heads on the 305s is very popular and worthwhile but beyond that trick flow and the others don't seam to make the 180 cc and above heads to fit in the 305s little bore.
I think I know why chevy made the 305 the way they did with the smaller bore, I just wish they would have destroked it instead of making the bore smaller. That way the head choices would be much greater.
And I don't like the idea of buying a cam for a 305 knowing it will need to be enough for a 350 latter on. I was heading down that road myself and said screw it and waited for the 350.
Oh yeah and about the Ford thing with the 5.0. There is a larger aftermarket for the 302 than the 351. That's why there is no big reason to upgrade. Most of their aftermarket is geared towards the 5.0.

Sitting bull makes a good point. The only thing on my 305 that I spent money on and wouldnt transfer well to a 350 would be the cam, which is a stock LT1 cam and I'll be out a whopping $35. Granted it would work, but its not something I'd like to use in a good 350. The Vortec heads would work fine, as well as the intake manifold. That was one of the things I kept in mind when I started my buildup, so all I would really need would be a decent short block, cam and gaskets and Im golden.
