Question Idle Problems

When the car starts it is fine, the idle is at 1000 rpm's, a little high but it is nessasary, anyways, put the car into gear and it jumps way down to almost 500 rpm's, sometimes it dies. We checked the spark plugs, leaks around the carb, the timing is right on we don't know what is going on. It has a new 4bbl carb, on a 305 87' camaro 4- speed auto. any input would be great. There doesnt seem to be any vacumm leaks either.

How long do you let it warm. Better yet, is it cold where you live. I have a 305 TBI and I have to let it warm up for about 10 minutes on really cold mornings or it does just that, it will idled at like 400-500 rpm and hit the gas and it lunges forward to 1700-2000. It does this when it's like 30 degrees in Florida...but after it's warmed up, it runs fine.

Check all your vaccum lines. I just had a similar problem with my 92 RS and it was a vaccum line on the backside of the intake that was cracked on the bottom so it couldn't be seen. I only realized it when I lifted another line and it picked this one up exposing the leak. I sprayed with brake cleaner initially and this didn't pick up the leak so physically chck all the lines. also check your lines to the charcoal canisiter as they sometimes get stopped up.
