leave the 305 tpi alone
i have no idea why the 305tpi gets so much bad talk. the torque is amazing on it. its a peppy litte car that will out run alot of family sedans almost all your imports and holds up just fine agianst other cars my bolt ons are listed. im doing much much more. there no reason with the right amout of work (cam heads headers intake manifold runners and ported plenum added) that i can run against a ls1 and totally murder and lt1 think about that.

i agree that the tpi 305's have some power, my bro's trans am is run to hell, wot its whole 200k mile life...im not kidding, well when i stole it a few months back and gave it hell, i was very surprized, i layed at least 60 ft of rubber....and this thing has rattling valves, shuts off all the time...you name it.....and it still had its punch...

You think the 305 TPI gets made fun of...try owning an LO3. Wait, LO3's are extremely slow...

They talk smack on the stock ones. Sure, we all laugh at a Ford 4.6 for being so dinky, but should someone create that small V8 into a powerhouse, no one will be talkin stuff on it anymore. Don't sweat what people say about your 305 when it was stock. Tell them to meet you at the strip or a redlight, then see who's laughing

What is the point of this topic??? Insecurity problem? Or do you really not understand what is wrong with 305's?
It gets made fun of because it was an ill-concieved engine. The 3.736" bore is crap, it isn't the small displacement that sucks. A 302 small block Chevy is a good engine, it has a 4.000" bore, the same as a 350. The large bore unshrouds the valves allowing for larger valves and superior airflow charateristics. I have a 305 TPI 5 speed car, yeah it has torque and is fun to drive, but would I spend a dime upgrading something on it that wouldn't swap over to a 350 later??? Hell no. To build power you want a big bore, short stroke and a long rod. (longer stroke equals more low end torque, while sacrificing high end power)
262 3.671" 3.10" (5.7" rod)
265 3.750" 3.00" ('55-'57 Gen.I 5.7" rod, '94-'96 Gen.II 4.3 liter V8 "L99" 5.94" rod)
267 3.500" 3.48" (5.7" rod)
283 3.875" 3.00" (5.7" rod)
302 4.000" 3.00" (5.7" rod)
305 3.740" 3.48" (5.7" rod)
307 3.875" 3.25" (5.7" rod)
327 4.000" 3.25" (5.7" rod)
350 4.000" 3.48" (5.7" rod)
350 4.000" 3.48" ('96-'00 Vortec, 5.7" rod)
400 4.125" 3.75" (5.565" rod)
There are all the Gen I and Gen II small block dimensions. Try making the 267 into a hotrod. Not gonna happen, worst small block ever.
chevyman502bb - "unless im mistaken, the TPI and TBI r based on the LO3"
The LO3 and the small cam 305 TPI are slightly different but they are both small blocks. The swirl port heads on TBI engines are junk. The cams in both are pathetic along witrh their restrictive exhaust and other mutiple bottlenecks.

well martin i wont lie im kinda insucure about it. i added exhaust and felt a big *** difference this winter it will get a cam and heads. the torque is great but it could use more. i like strhanleys comment. it feels much better then it did stock much better.
but it needs more work
