Is my tranny holding me back at the track?

Ok, this has been bugging me for quite some time with my car. It seems that when I get to 3rd gear that my car just falls flat on its face. For recerence I'll say this, Last Year my track times were 14.8 @ 93ish mph sometimes as high as 94mph. My 1/8 mile mph was 72 or 71 ALWAYS.

This year my 1/4 time dropped to a 13.7 @99 mph. Ok so I gained about 5mph in the 1/4. BUT the thing is in the 1/8 mile I have hit 79.xxmph more than once. So I gained almost a solid 8mph in the 1/8 mile.

So what has gone awry here? I gain almost 8mph in the 1/8 but somehow only gain roughly 5mph in the 1/4. Where did those other 3 mph go? Even if my 3rd gear pulled as hard as it did last year, I should have gained that 8mph up top too, shouldn't I? It only stands to reason that 8mph in the 1/8 should also be 8 more in the 1/4.

I am stumped on this one. So Who thinks my tranny is the culprit?

Is You car TPI? If so that may be your problem especailly if the TPI is mostly stock. TPI's are low end Torque monsters, problem is that they stop pulling really hard after about 4800 rpm. So that could explian why you would see significant gains in the 1/8th and not so much in the 1/4 mile.

That is weird that you'd just lose that 3 mph on the top end, it should still be pulling harder with the higher duration cam. How is your fuel situation up top?

It doesn't mean anything- it just shows where your car makes power.

There are lots of variables involved.

Exactly and your car being a TPI it makes its HP at low RPMs

If youve got the cash for it I believe Mini Rams are supposed to help you with the higher RPMs but I may be confusing it with the Super Ram ask someone who has one

Guys, I think that I will have the tranny gone through and a new intake setup on the car next spring. We'll see what it does then. The TPI was slated to be gone anyway. Saving away right now for it. Well.... right after I pay for this new Cell phone. Nextel i90c
