Post Need Help passing Cali emissions

I bought my father-in-laws 84' Camaro H.O.
a couple weeks ago and I am trying to get it to pass emissions the first time. So as to not have to worry about a gross polluter. He messed it up pretty bad. He pulled the catalytic converter and welded in a straight pipe. I have put a cat back in but hye tells me everything on the car is original...everything!!! The O2 sensor needs to be replaced and I'm not sure about the EGR valve but I am going to replace that any way. Do you think I should go ahead and just replace it all or just the major things.
I work at Kragen part time and know there are alot of emmisions parts on this particular car. It has 92k on the O.D. and he has also messed with the carb settings.

Thanx ahead..

Get a cat and put it in (hell get a dual cat setup..even better for flow). Replace the egr valve and o2 sensor..make sure that it throws no codes and run the car hot (drive it around town for a little while) then take it to the smog shop..but make sure you dont let that z cool down. Maybe try adding that guaranteed to pass smog crap you can buy. What part of sd are you located in..I happen to know a shop up here in north county that kinda looks the other way when it coems to certain things..if you know what I mean.

You might want to take it to an emissions cert'd repair shop and have them do a diagnostic run. We have Cal emissions here and our system will allow a diagnostic run through the complete emissions test.I woould suggest doing this before you start swapping parts you may not otherewise need. They should also be able to get your carb adjusted back into spec as well.

Thanks for your help on the subject. I live in Tierra Santa. Murphy Canyon Naval housing. I'm in the Navy. Going with a dual cat sounds good I was planning on doing that eventually anyway. I think thats what I'll do. I did put a universal cat on there already but it's only bolted on. I figured on the O2 sensor but really didn't know about the EGR Valve. What about the EGR solenoid and TPS. Man this is going to get expensive and take alot of time to bring this car back to life... I love this $h1T.
Thanks again.

Technically, putting a dual-cat setup on a single-cat car is not smog legal, so be careful you dont get a tech who will hassle you about it.
Check out the local SoCal sites, there are quite a few people who can help you tune the car back up.

Anyone know how much a dual cat setup will run me for my 86 Z ? I have come to the conclusion the with 120K, the cat is pretty well shot. SO rather than dump 400 or so for a new one from GM, I want to know how much I can get the dual setup for. I live In SAn Francisco California, and I would also need to pass emissions. What are the chances of me not passing on the basis of dual cats over the stock single??? I really would like these, but if im not gonna pass, I dunno what to do.! Thanks guys!

Most techs wont know to look for just a single cat. If they see cats down there...their pretty much satisfied as far as the visual inspection goes.

My dual cat setup just went south on me. Im looking into straight pipe to replace the two until I have to smog it again next year.

The stock GM dual cat setup probably costs around $1000. If you know a good exhaust specialist, you can have him bend up a 2 1/2" mandrel-bent system like I have. Then get some Car Sound 2 1/2" cats to go with it.
Regarding being smog legal, a local member with an 89 Formula 350 (stock dual cats) was hassled about it. The smog book was wrong, it said dual cats was not an option on 89 cars. He had to take it to another smog station because the first guy would not pass it, even tho it was proved his book was wrong.

I don't see why it wouldn't come with one. If your car was setup to pass emissions, then it has an air/smog pump. Look at your manifolds. That should tell you. My 86Z has one.

My car is a 4bbl non-serpentine setup. It IS equipped with an air pump. I have never tried passing somg without a pump, but I am pretty sure its necessary, if for nothing more than the visual. But without it "injecting" air into your exhaust gases, you might not pass the sniffer either. My Z passed smog with flying colors. It was actually breathing pretty clean for a 16 year old car. If you don't have a smog pump, you might not pass. But look at your setup carefully. Someone may have modified it at an earlier time because they didn't care to pass emissions. I would put one on anyway.

Just my .02 cents

OK, I just realized your in Cali like me. To pass the sniffer you will need the punp. Depending on where you go, some guys don't really care, they just want money. For the right price, they will let you go. But since your HO isn't really a "perfoermer" and doesn't need to do without ait injection, I would say go have it made legal or make sure it will pass. Other things to look out for are EGR, you might also want to change your PCV valve while you're at it, That will proly cost you 5 bucks, but its a good idea. Check for vacuum leaks. Our rides have tons of vac lines. Also, if its an original Cali car, it will have a special emissions package like all ours do. Only Cali got this. And the tech will know by the code under to the hood. Other things they will check to see if are present, catalytic converter, check the carb, check engine light, fuel evap. cansiter, things like that. I got lucky when I bought my Z. It just had an idling problem that was no big deal. I am gonna drop in the 350HO conversion that IS SMOG LEGLA for us since we have 83-86 4bbl cars, VIN G&H I am so psyched. It will sure beat the pants off my 165 hp now. Well, I hope this helps at all. Email me if you have any other questions I might help ya with.

Red face

Wow! Cali emissions are not what I'd thought. In Ontario, the government runs the emissions testing. Shops can't fake a pass as the actual readings go to the Ministry of Transportation and they regulate what is to be considered acceptable levels. My '84 Zed failed. The testing indicated my factory cat (which has since been replaced by a Dynomax Super Converter) was working at 6%. I was advised by the technicians that a new cat would be all the car needed to pass the next time around.
This emissions crap is a pain in the butt and it's expensive to boot! (Yeah, I know, it's a necessary evil, but anyway...) My car was given a "conditional pass" which means it has 2 years to be brought up to snuff or I won't be able to validate my plates and the car will be yanked off the road. This would suck even more! Gotta love in-yer-face government. Thanks for letting me rant and best of luck.
