Need some help/suggestions with the exhaust on my 92

i'm a student at wyotech right now and at the end of each six week phase i get 3 days to use the shop to work on my car. i was thinking the first thing i can do is the exhaust. i was thinking of either redoing the stock/current one (it has dynomax mufflers) or installing electric cutouts, or both. my questions are:

what setup/brand should i run for the best performance with a good mix of sound quality?

i also have a catalytic convertor that is all rusted out, should i replace it or just gut it?

would it be better to run just a longtube setup or electric cutout?

should i run a stock style (with mufflers) exhaust setup or go for a more true duel setup?

what type of headers (long/short & what size) should i get?, i've heard of people having problems installing longtube headers.

i was planning hooking everything up and then having a shop weld it all together to make it air tight

thankx guys...

This feels like deja vu, . I'd just stick with some shorties and a good 3" cat-back. I'd get either Edelbrock TPI headers (they're better than the junk they give you for TBIs) or the Hooker 2055s, my personal favorite. Get a high-flow cat, an electic cut-out before the cat, and any 3" cat-back, Hooker also comes to mind.

Re: Need some help/suggestions with the exhaust on my 92

lol, your on all the sites i post on. but yea what about running just a longtube exhaust (no muffler) instead of worrying about cutouts on top of a 3" cat-back. if emmissions were a problem then i woulda said so. noise limit isn't a problem either. one question: what are the biggest difference between shorties and longtube headers. some people say shorties others say longtube but who is right and why? specific info would help too...

I guess you could just run some longtube headers and some pipes (it's going to be LOUD!), but you will lose some ground clearance and torque, from what I hear. Longtubes are also supposedly "too big" for most 305s, too. I'm no expert on exhaust systems, so hopefull someone else will chime in on this (longtube vs. shorties).

well i do plan on boring and stroking the motor to 330 and putting on some more performance oriented parts when i take High Perf. Engines in a few months if that'll make a difference. and don't argue with my cuz unless my block disintegrates by then i'm using that one, i'd rather learn/experiment on a little old 305 than a new 350 block or such.

It'll be an expensive lesson. Go ahead and do the performance stuff on the 305 if you wish, but the stroking is a very poor HP/$'s approach.

Unless you start with a 350 block...

I fully agree with the TPI application exhaust recommendations.

Look them over, they have a flowmaster merge at the back and manderal bent 3 inch tubing from the collector into them, the back is a 4 inch outlet. A freind bought one, we tried to have our local exh expert reproduce it and it was close to 200$, and he had to cut and weld the bends, couldnt reproduce the bends on his manderal machine.

I dunno... that still seems like a LOT to me for just a Y-Pipe.
Hey five7kid.. why is stroking not a good perf/$ ratio?

Don't forget though....he's not paying for machine work

Why did five7kid say that stroking is not a good performance option?

Re: Need some help/suggestions with the exhaust on my 92

The thing about the stroked 305s is that though youre adding cubes youre still hampered with the bore, the bore itself shrouds the valves and also limits your valve size without extra machining. When you get to a flowbench have them flow your heads with a 3.81 inch bore and a 4.030 inch bore, watch the numbers rise with the larger bore.

what do you mean the bore itself shrouds the valves?

Re: Need some help/suggestions with the exhaust on my 92

i have access to all of that in a few months if you look at my sig, and i think i know what i want to go with. a true duel 2 1/2" or 3" exhaust but i want it to be as quite as i can without a crapload of backpressure. then i'll just install and electric cutout for when i want to get noisy. i was thinking of going mufflerless but then i can't shut it down if i want it to be quiet. who knows what'll happen in a few months, and i don't plan on that motor being the last one in that car. i'd also like to tub out the back and put some huge street drags but maybe thats going too far
