New Tach

I just installed a monster tach from autometer and it reads about 500rpms less than the stock one, which tach is correct?

the autometer. Stock 3rd gen tachs are notorious for going bad, when I put my autometer in, it rean from 800-1500 rpm less at redline...

I concur. 3rd gen gauges in general are inaccurate, and the tachs and speedos in particular are bad about going out.

yeah i noticed that, so here is a question, if it is that far off, is the red line at a lower rpm? like you start with a 5000 red line but it is 1500 off, so is the new red line 3500 or can i still push it to 5K?
also, where the hell do i connect the backlight wire to?

It should not be that far off. 100-200 rpms is normal but not 1500. I would hook the backlight switched hot wire with the instrument panel.

When you say backlight wire, do you mean the 12V lighting wire (should be a white wire)? If so, all you have to do is just pull your fusebox down and tee into the INST LPS fuse. There should be a small gray wire going from that fuse behind the fuse box. Tee into that and now when you turn on your lights your tach will light up too!

Take a timing light with a good tach on it like a Snap On one and see what sort of RPM you are getting.

I've heard about tachs being a tiny bit off and the gas guage being inaccurate at certian times, but in my experience that's it.

Matter of fact, a little while ago I was approaching one of those speed clockers and it was right on. SPEED LIMIT 30MPH and it was it clocked me at 40MPH, being exactly correct to the speed I was going and what the speedometer was saying.

My scantool will tell me what the ECM sees and I compare it to the gauge. I somehow trust the ECM reading more than the gauge. Just like the temp gauge too.

Did you feel the performance boost from that larger aftermarket gage?
