Open Dif.

Open Dif.
I have a 83 z28 and it has an open diff with 2.56 gears. The car has ALWAYS hooked posi. It didnt have the spider gears welded. I broke the uper and lower spider gears and im looking to replace them. What is crazy to me is that it doesnt peg leg. I dont whant to put spend the $ on new spider gears if it is going to turn it into a one wheel wonder. Does anyone els have an open diff that spins bolth tires? I was told that if you are putting out enuff ponies it will hook posi, is this true or did i just have a freak diff?

an open diff is a peg leg or will spin 1 wheel. what you are referring to is a limited slip. when going around turns it lets the inner wheel spin as needed vs the outside tire. but when you punch it the diff will lock up and both wheels will spin.
the "posi" term is an old pontiac option they gave back in the 60s during the "widtrack" ad days. over time the posi term has been twisted and changed, kinda like how the word "extreme" has been over used.
are you wanting to replace the "carrier" or what?

Sometimes open diffs will spin both tires if the spiders are galled (usually from lack of lube) causing friction. And yes, I've seen high HP cars spin both with an open diff, but passenger side usually keeps spinning for 2x longer than driver side.
Since you only have 2.56s in your diff, consider tracking down a posi rear with deeper gears. Unless mileage is a big concern.
Serious: this is your 1st post since joining in 2006???

LMAO yea it is my first post lol.
The pin was pretty hairy. It did look like it has been run low on oil.
What my question was is if i put new spider gears and shaft is it going to peg leg.
Im trying not to buy a posi unit so i can spend the $$$ on somthin els but i dont whant to spend $150 on a set of spider gears to have a 1 wheel wonder. So i think im going to take the plunge and get a posi.
I have been looking at these http://www.jegs.com/i/Auburn+Gear/109/542057/10002/-1 http://www.jegs.com/i/Detroit-Locker...1A319/10002/-1 has anyone ever bought one of these? What is the better one?

1983 Z28's never had a 2:56 factory stock 10-bolt gear ratio and unless you have RPO G80 OPTION for a limited slip rear (correct term not posi). As stated if the car had a limited slip it was a gov-lock style and is wore out, due too many burnout over the years. Your choice would be finding a complete 3rd gen rear or buy a new limited slip & new gears which will be big bucks. But that is price to pay if you want that two wheel burnout. Good luck

The carrier has no clutches or anything, so im pretty sure it's an open diff.
I divided the ring gear by the pinion and got 2.56 witch i dont think was even an option.
im gong to go with 88 iroc with the power trax b/c the car does go on road trips and im getting 18 mpg on highway with these gears.
Let me know how well it works

Just in case nobody saw this in "Camaro Performer" here is a complete rear end build.

I actually got my idea from "CHEVY HIGH PERFORMANCE MAGAZINE" May issue of 2004! The article is titled; "7 1/2 Is Enough", in the article they stated they called Moser, and that a properly built 10 bolt can handle 400hp at the rear wheels. To further help me along with my rebuild I also purchased a DVD and book from:

did they say it will handle 400 hp but wont stand up to clutch dump slams from the 400 hp? thats what alot of folks dont understand. it will handle it if you know how to apply the power to the rear properly. like pre loading the rear before take off at the track taking the slack out of hte drive train.

im with ya, a friend has a S-10 blazer that at the time was doing low 11's high 10s on a stock 10. it finally went and he went with a moser.
over on TGO Dan Burk has a tech article on "how to build a better 10 bolt" me im a 9 bolt (not 9 inch) guy and i love em but its not finding the parts, its the cost of the parts. im currently looking for an empty 10 bolt housing to build for my 89 formula so i can rebuild my 9 bolt and leave it put up.
