Post Open element filter on my TBI ?

I was looking at open element filters at pep boys today and was thinking how much better it would be than my stupid stock restrictive air box i have on my 92 RS right now. While reading the box it mentioned that it was for Carb aplications only. How would i go about fitting it on my tbi, would it still bolt right up.. or what fabricaitons might i have to make?

thanks
mitch

It should make a big differance. The stock air cleaner is pretty small. Only problem is after you drive for a little while and the engine gets hot you will start sucking in hot air. You might want to look into finding a duel snorkle air cleaner.

hot air or cold air isn't really teh point of an open element. the stock air box has so many restrictions in it that it si the volume of air that is at issue. even the dual snorkel can not allow in as much air as an open element.

Old TBI truck trick...

Remove the lid from the air cleaner, flip it upside down, and put it back on the truck. It opens the airbox up dramatically, and it's a bit cheaper than shelling out thirty bucks for an aftermarket air cleaner. Provided the hood will shut on it this way, I've never tried it on a Camaro, you're in the clear. As for the hot air dilemma, it's not that big of a deal. Yes, colder air will make it run better, but the sheer increase in volume more than makes up for this.

Also, if you yank the stock assembly for an aftermarket piece, make sure you plug off the vacuum port at the base of the TBI with a vacuum plug, readily available from Auto Zone, that way you have the least possible potential for a vacuum leak down the road.

Also, everyone swears up and down that K&N's are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Honestly, I've had one on two different vehicles, one with a 4-bbl 350 and the other a TBI 350 and I didn't notice an appreciable difference on either. Go to the paper 14x3 and save $30.

Lastly, the extra noise you encounter from the open element breather is the throttle bodies pulling in air, it isn't that loud, not even under WOT, especially if you have an aftermarket exhaust. Fuhgeddaboudit.
