WTF what are you asking for your car cash, trades,?

AAAAAAAAA,
Hooker makes two different style long
tubes sets, mine are supercomps and the collectors point to the passanger side of the car and can be bought for around $350.
They also make some long tube ones that point toward back axle like normal long tubes
but I'm not sure what they are going for
butt any headers worth a $hit are going to be costly like any 3rd or 4th gen unless you
just want something over stock manifolds, but
nothing to build big power with.

The fastest stock 3rd Gen for you to buy would most likely be a 90-92 5.7L car. Most I have seen run low 14's. I had a buddy in HS that ran 13.80's with his bone stock 92'. I personally saw it run 13.80's @ 98 MPH on Yokohama street radials with paper air filters. All I can figure is that his car was just a "factory ringer."

Lotta opitons for thirdgen performance. What you want is either a 350 TPI, (87-92), the newer the better, or a 305 TPI 5spd car. Either will run in the 14s with a decent tune and decent driving.

Go to www.thirdgen.org and check out the tech database for year to year options and power ratings. If I were you I'd look for 89-92 350 TPI car (all autos).

Chevy Hi Performance got an LG4 to run 13.15 for under $6,000. That's including the price they paid for the car. The LG4 is the weakest 305, but with simple bolt ons and some nitrous they got that thing to move. So don't count the 305's out. Obviously a lot more can be achieved with a 350 though.

i read that chevy hipo thing, it was pretty neat, and fast too

don't knock the little guy, i got a 305, if i would ever get my head out of aS$ and get some decent heads for it it might be faster, not to mention the anemic compression of the 84 model year ,

The fastest thirdgens are the 89-92 TPI cars with dual catalytic converters and 4-wheel disc brakes. That'll be both 350 automatics and 305 5-speeds. The stock LT1 is almost identical to the stock TPI cam, only the LT1 cam has more lift. Its not worth the swap. The stock heads suck on our cars, so your best bet is a 350 car, pull out the engine and freshen it with new heads, a cam, and headers/exhaust, and put it back in. Depending on your intake (stock intake sucks too), you can run in the 12's like me.

Aaright, *cracks knuckles*.....

The fastest cars were the 89-92 350 TPI or 305 TPI 5-speed cars. They ran usually mid 14's to high 14's.

Look at my sig. Thats all the mods I did. I netted a 1.1 second gain and roughly 7mph in the 1/4 with a convertor, headers/full exhaust, cam, pistons, fresh rebuild. The rest of the mods I did last year. Those from last year totalled around $1000. The mods I did this year cost me about $2500. So all total I spent around $3500 in the car and I run 13.7's @ 99mph with an awesome 1.87 60' on bald street tires. Still haviong problems with the programming. It will only get better once I start modifying the calibrations on the chip.

The specs of my motor should be in the sig pretty much.

As for the chip burning equipment. What you'll need:
-Laptop ~$200 off eBay
-Pocket Programmer II $150
-UV Light eraser $40
-AKM OBD-I cable $95 (Or you can build one)
-Software $free

With this stuff you can scan the cars sensors in the ewxact way a GM mechanic would. The laptop and cable are used as a diagnostic tool. Then with this data, you begin to modify the .bin file that is stored on the chip. After modifying it, you erase the chip and then reburn it with the new calibrations. Its quite a task to learn to do but once you are able to do it, you'll be glad you did. Every mod you do like new heads or whatnot... you'll be able to burn a few new chips until you get it dead on.

Good Luck in the search.

Looking through Summit they range anywhere from $750 for a set of basic 2.02/1.60 "World Products" heads all the way up to $1300 for a set of Trick Flow 23* heads.

I am not sure what the AFR's cost though. They are not a line that Summit sells. They are also one of the best heads out there for these cars.

I paid just under $1300 shipped for my AFR's. I noticed no one mentioned Vortec's or fast burns. The iron Vortec's are a good buy as well.

Well it cost me around $3000 to get into the 13's. I don't know how far into the 13's I'll get yet because its still scorching hot here. In agbout 2 months we'll see exactly how much $3000 in mods to a 3rd gen can go. Current best is 13.73

3000... that IS ALOT for those times. I guess its still better then a lot of things out there. Plus with N2O it would probably start to be interesting.

Any problem with heat soak? Like when its really wamr to the non carburated cars have trouble with the heat like the LT1 engine has?

89-92 are the fastest. If you want the speed, nothing beats having the 350!!
The 91 doesn't have the MAF to slow down the incomming air. But they are all rated at 245 HP for the 350 TPI.
Like every one else has said, mid to upper 14's sounds about right, depending on traction, weather, etc.
If money is an issue, like it is for me, start small, do easy bolt-ons until you are ready to rebuild the motor. Do an air foil, air filters, remove the baffles in the air box under the air filters, cat back exhaust, 1.6:1 rockers, you get the picture.
If you are gonna do a rebuild, then dive into the heads, people have told me that the stock heads are good for 350 HP easy, with the right port job. I also heard that the stock bottom end is good for about 400 HP. Get a good cam, and if you already got the 1.6:1 rockers, then the cam doesn't have to be too huge. I am planning on porting the stock intake before I fork over the bucks for an aftermarket one,(they are expensive). And unless you are gonna be burning your own chip, wait until all of the mods are complete before having one made custom.
After that, you can always look at lightening up the car, rule of thumb, every 100 lbs is equal to 10 HP.

Oh...and BTW, the 4th gen motors come out the bottom not the top like the 3rd gen, so unless you have a lift, good luck getting a 4th gen motor out!

Good luck...Happy Hunting!
