ported maf didnt work?
i had a spare maf kicking around used but never used by me, so i was bored and went at it with the dremel. i cut out the screen, the retainer that held the screen in and the lip and tabs that held the retainter in.
threw it on my car and started it up it had a really rough idle wanted to stall and had a huge hesitation.
is this maf fubar or is there somthing i can do. i only ran it for a minute but i didnt see any codes come up for it. maybe it was bad when i got it?
ill try it again if i get another spare maf... i dont want to hack up the original one that works fine.

Well, have you ever tested the spare maf before you ground it? You might not have got a unit that is calibrated for your car. In any case, after grinding it, you might have to drive the car for a bit so the ECM gets used to the new calibration.

You can try erasing the settings in the ECM by disconecting the battery for a bit and then let it see if it can set itself. However, it is too late for you to verify that the MAF works because that is something you should have installed, unmolested for a week to make sure. Now all you can do is check part numbers and make sure that they are for the same application.

reset ecu, put it in, started to idle better still hesitating. took it for a drive and the engine light came on.
its bad and will be my new coffee mug soon. ill find another one and try again

What does the code come up as? If you had a scanner, you might be able to tell what the reading is and have a better idea of what it is doing. Maybe you broke the filaments. Also, are you sure that is the correct MAF for that application?

yeah it was off an 86 with the 2.8
i have a scanner, the code is still stored. ill plug it in tomorrow just to make sure it was
shouldnt have broke the filiments, they are suspended in the middle and i was real careful with my steel carbide bit.
