Possible to swap gears from 87 posi 9 bolt to 89?
Hey guys, well, my 89 has the nice PBR brakes and everything and I dont wanna mess with doing a whole rearend swap. Could I just do the gears? They are both borg warner 9 bolts with posi and discs, but that rear i got out of an 87 iroc has the 3.27's and right now I have 2.77's. Is there anything special I need to replace other than a gear in the tranny? Let me know guys... thanks

You have to remove the carrier to get the gears out anyway. You can pull the gears and swap them over, and the only other thing you'll have to change is the speedo gear. You're gonna need a new crush sleeve, and since you're gonna have it apart new bearings might be a good idea just on principle (depending on how much they cost.)
You'll want to watch out for the gear wear pattern though....even if you use the same bearings and shims it can be different due to variations in the housings. It might be best to pull the rear ends apart yourself and take the gears and housing you wanna use to someone who knows how to read a pattern and set up the rear end.

The 2.77 ratio is a series 2 carrier and the 3.27 is a series 3 carrier. You will need to swap the gear set and carrier as an assembly.

Someone told me that due to the different systems, PBR and delco, that there were differences in mounting style or position. I would very much like to just swap rear ends and leave it at that, as the rearend with the 3.27's has half the mileage my stock does. So thanks for all the help fellas, I will more than likely try and tackle this problem sometime before summers end.
Also, does anyone know where I can get that gear to compensate for the new gears? So my speedo will read correctly? Thanks

You're right. The brake systems are indeed different. However, it's an easy swap unless you just have to switch the gears. Miles knows his stuff and can give you all the help you need in the gear swap department.
Since you can't post pics, I'll have to explain it to you. The '87 disc rears have one caliper leading and one trailing. The '89 and up disc rears have both trailing or leading depending on the years. The calipers, rotors, and backing plates differ in these 2 styles. The hard brake lines are also different so you'd have to change those also. No biggie, there's places online to get new ones from for around $30 or so, higher for stainless lines. (The leading/trailing rear is the 13th pic in the album on the link I will post.)
All you would have to do is get yourself a set of 9 bolt backing plates, which I have available; a set of PBR calipers, rotors, caliper carriers, and e-brake cables. To swap it all over, you'd have to pull the axles, remove and swap to the "new" style backing plates, reinstall the axles, and put all the brake stuff on. No big deal, just a few hours to do it all.
Let me know if you need the plates, I have them ready to go.
Also, for pics of the differences, look at the pics of my rearend swap here:

As far as the speedo gear goes, the dealer will have that and the part number is posted over on Thirdgen.org.
If you're running an automatic, go to www.700r4.com and they also have it listed.
