Purchasing an 86 Z28
I have my eye on a 86 Z-28, 305 with T-Tops. My question is outside the usual what should I be looking for that are problem-matic with this model. Ie unibody rots on mustangs, 350's cam at 80K, etc, you know show stopper kinda stuff. It has 111000 miles and is about a four. I'm going to restore it for my daughter as a daily driver. I'm already planning new interior, paint, decals, suspension, breaks, steering (ball joints etc.). You response would be appreciated! They are asking $1700.00 I'm thinking 1200.00.

86 IROC problems....
Look for leaking T tops. Is it really an IROC? Do some research and make sure it really is what you are paying for. VIN numbers would help your search.
The early 86 cars had a SINGLE fan cooling system. It is not as good as a DUAL fan set up. They switched to dual fans in late 86 or 87.
The 700r4 for 86 is somewhat weak. If its original and you plan on a rebuild, look for a newer core, like an 88 or newer. Too many upgrages. (my car thumps LOUDLY when you put it in gear-the later cars had an upgrade to soften this harshness)
The 86 cars had 4 v-belts on the engine to run all of the accessories. This is a pain in the butt. Later cars had a serpentine belt system, which is quieter and more efficient.
The 86 cars had a recall to fix a groan in the air conditioner, related directly to how the compressor is mounted. My car never had the repair, and the parts are no longer available. It moans terribly when you turn on the air. (at idle especially when in gear)
There are lots of things that can be a problem. Do some research on the net, and talk to your local Chevy mechanic. Chevy really didnt do their homework on the early cars. Lots of bugs when new.
Really, if I were you, I would look for a newer car. Maybe an 88 or newer. Less built in problems.
