Question about Headers
#4
i wouldnt buy SLP headers if i had the choice. from what ive heard they make it real hard to get to the plugs and stuff like that. i have heddman shorties on mine and they fit so easy and i can see almost all the plugs. i can change the plugs ALOT easier w/ these headers on than w/ the stock manifolds. and the best part besides fitting so good....they were the cheap in price.

I have SLP 1 3/4 headers and it's easier to change plugs than with stock stuff. I can do it all from the top now. You will need to cut ~.75" off a 14mm plug socket and use I believe a 3/4' ratchet wrench on the back of the socket but, you can see as well as access all 8 plugs.

Do any of you Heddman guys have flange warpage problems? I had a set and two of my buddies have them right now, and it is constantlly time to put in new header gaskets. Their cheesy flange is worthless, my buddies '88 GTA on the other hand is running SLP's and they are a far superior product. Another buddy has the Edelbrocks and they are kind of middle of the road. You get what you pay for.

I have the SLP's 1 3/4ths and routed most of the plug wires from the top.. with about 3-4 of those bundling clips.. they were all easy to put in.. the middle two on the driver side had to use a special wrench on them because was no way able to get a socket on them.. and the the back two on the passenger side i had to get under the car to push on.. I have all the stock AIR and stuff too. Passenger side header was put on when engine was not put in yet.. driver side header i unbolted the driver side engine mount and jacked up the engine about 1/4-1/2 inch and it dropped right in.. Definitly a good set of headers.
oh yea.. alrighty was planning on a ministarter.. so thats what i used.. Ministarter a lot easier to get up there without droppin the exhaust too.. which is a little bit bigger with headers going to a 3" Y

If you can get away with it this is how it's done
doug791 no not insane. I just have a can do attitude. Granted it's not like changing plugs on a 69 Chevy with an inline 6 but I have no trouble reaching the plugs from the top. As alkim said, I also removed the un-neccessary smog pump.

SLP headers are NOTORIOUS for not fitting around the steering column.
Here is a useful tip: use Bosch Platinum single prong plugs. They are shorter than average and leave just enough room for the rubber spark plug boot to not press against the header. They also last 2 or 3 times longer than your average AC plug, meaning you only have to do the nasty spark plug removal scene every third year or so

Mine fit around the steering column just fine. No fiddling. In any case, the smog pump just makes #2 and #4 a little more difficult. Go from down below and you should have no problems. That or take the smog pump diverters off when you do it. Just a couple of 10mm bolts. I am using NGK V power plugs with Accel 300+ wires and no problems of burning boots.
