Quiet Muffler Selection

I'm putting the back half on my 84 Z on hold since the chassis was taking so long, my solution to having a fast car without the wait was to buy a cheap 89 RS with a 305 and install the 383 motor into it.

However, since this is the route I'm taking, I'd like to turn the car into somewhat of a sleeper. So I'm trying to find out if anyone knows of a muffler that isnt quite as restrictive as a stock exhaust, but is very quiet inside the car, and reasonably quiet outside the car, not like a flowmaster or anything like that. The cam has 260+ duration so keeping it quiet can be a challenge, I would use stock mufflers if they came in 3" and flowed reasonably.

The car will have dual cut outs so track performance won't be affected but running on the street id like to be quiet.

Thanks.

How do 4th gen mufflers flow? I imagine better and they aren't too loud either.

go with either the new magnaflow or the slp split exit system and put a 18in resonator or bulit muffler on the I-pipe.Everything is straight through so no real flow promblems and it will be quiet.

1. Do you know which magnaflow part number it is? Are you meaning the "Wide Open" mufflers?

2. What part number is the SLP split exit system?

3. By bulit muffler, do you mean the Dynomax Bullet mufflers?

4. The I pipe, do you mean the straight piece that runs to the back of the car? Like where the cat would go?

Right now I only see slp offering the 2otl system for your car part#31004

yes I mean the bullet mufflers

yes I am talking about the straight pipe thats in the middle of the muffler and cat

Thanks! Thats probably what I'll do then. How quiet do you think it'll be? I know that most of the straight-thru type mufflers are pretty damn loud but running 2 mufflers should quieten things up.

well if you still run a cat with any of those cat backs it should not be that bad(well not sure how wicked your motor is going to be)
You can even try a hooker cat back. But any of these cat back will work fine for the street, plus the bullet. And for the track you have the cutout or cutout's if you run long tubes. This sounds like one cool exhaust. To bad you don't live close to jersey. There is a guy out of fairlawn that does amazing exhaust work.Doug's street shop.He puts mufflex to

The motor is the one I was gonna put in my drag car, tunnel ram, dual 660 center squirter carbs, victor jr heads, big cam, needs about 4500 stall but I'll be running 3500 in this car since I can get one for $230 bucks n I don't wanna buy a $900 converter for a 700R4. With a set of Lemons 1-7/8-2" step tube headers and proper tuning I should see anywhere from 540-600hp outta that thing, but since it's going into the RS I'm just throwing in one thing at a time, for now cheap 1-5/8" hedman's, a 3500 700R4 converter etc, see what it does, it's even got 2.73 gears still so its gonna be nowhere near its potential, but I think traction will be my biggest issue so detuning the motor for the 215-65-15 street tires is an alright idea.

I know your going for the sleeper look but just go with the perf. exhaust. You will get more hp and flow. Plus you will just look like another hot shot with perf exhaust which is pretty much everyone nowadays. Theyll think your car is stock too until you open those cutouts and smoke em. Then itll be fun to see the look on there face in the rearview..

Dynomax mufflers flow awesome and are quiet. My advice would be to run a muffler and a resonator style muffler like a bullet muffler. I would run a Dynomax ultra flow with a dynomax bullet muffler before it. A quiet, fast car is possible! A guy I am friend's with did the exhaust on a low 12 second el camino (with 2.73's) that has 2 mufflers per pipe with duals.

If you are going dual exhaust, an X pipe quiets a car down A LOT.

I have true duels on my car, but after getting to much attention from the cops im changing over to stock 98 z28 single tip exhaust coming from one side of the x-pipe. Other side of the x-pipe and along the piping in the 98 exhaust I will have electric cutouts, they get a bit pricey, but the car *should* sound stock, and have amazing flow when I open the cutouts. Im also putting in a NOS throttle switch at the same time so the cutouts open automatically at WOT.
They'll think shes stock till I nail it, then BAM

Its taking alot longer than planned to do the install thou because I have a sumped fuel tank and had to custom the elbow over the axle to reach the muffler that has been lowered about 2" blelow the stock location. Should be finished tomorrow and I'll tell you how it sounds.

Cool, I have a cut out in my IROC, I dont like the way it sounds with a stock cam, but at the track I pick up a tenth so who cares right. Ive got one big F'in cam goin into my 383 which is usually what causes my exhaust to be loud - in my 84 Z I had a real loud exhaust with a Lunati bracket master cam with 235/235 duration and .507/507 lift - then I put a cam of unknown origin into the car n it was quiet as hell with the same muffler.... so it'll be interesting to see how it works out.
