Unhappy Rough Idle

My 85 Iroc doesn't start too good to begin with, but when it is idling the rpms may drop don to 500, it still runs then but really bad, it putts. I was wondering what caused it, I bought some fuel system cleaner and the car is due for a tune up, I'm sure the fuel filter should be replaced too. Let me know if you know whats up with it, thanks.

you might have a miss or your tps could be set wrong. those would be my guesses.

Try this first. Remove the TB and remove the IAC solenoid and the IAC housing. Clean all the parts with break cleaner until you are satisfied. Reassemble. Run the car till it is warm and in closed loop. Get the scan tool out and read the IAC counts. It should be around 20-30. If it is higher, you open the throttle blades more. If it is lower, you close the blades. After all is said and done, you should be fine. Next, adjust the TPS to between 0.54 and 0.6V.

How is your O2 sensor? If it is plugged up, it could also cause bad idle tho not at startup.

yeah my car does that too. Only in order for eveything to work and me to have decent power i had to advance my timing alot. I need a carb job and ignition bad. I would say it is a miss like in mine. Check all the wires with the timing light. I did this to mine and all of them worked but they wouldn't have a constant flash or even a patter of flash 3 times then no flash instead it would just do whatever it wanted.

Check your vacuum, MAF cars(TPI ones at least)don't function well with any kind, big or small. Any air that isn't metered by the MAF will really screw with your air/fuel ratio, sure the o2 will tell the ECM to compensate, but what if the leak is on the drivers side runners and/or passanger side intake manifold gasket? No o2 there.
