Post RPM gauge

I have a 91 Z28 with a auto trans. and a 355cid. I have an MSD 6AL box/coil/distributor and Taylor wires. My RPM gauge is shooting around like crazy even though I hold the engine speed steady and the cars running smmoth and constant. Any ideas on whats going on?
