screwed 16 years ago... and some questions!

Well recently at school my buddy asked me if i had any 350's lying around for his 88 formula 350. I told him sure do, 87 GTA 350 engine. He got all excited and asked how much I told him i would ask my dad whats its worth and get back to em. Well i got to work this after noon, asked my dad and he said 500 bucks for basically a long block w/ some high milage (still ran). I called the kid up and told him 4 bolt main 350. Well my buddy said the 350's came with 2 bolt mains so thats my first question. What did stock L98 TPI engines come with, 2 or 4 bolt mains? Well i decided to pull the pan off and check for myself... low and behold its a 2 bolt main... Odd... i looked up the engine codes right infront of the passenger side head.... NOTHING THERE. that tells me its a 305. The person who previously owned the engine who also works with me is astonished. He bought the 87 GTA brand new and the sticker says L98 on it... He then told me after 32k miles the engine went south due to dealer error and they replaced it for him under warrenty... yea they stuck a 305 HO TPI engine in it instead of the L98. Things come together and he now realizes why he couldn't catch his buddies 87 L98 iroc lol. Funny how things work.

Anyway i just wanna know what L98's came with, 2 or 4 bolt mains. Thanks all for readin.

Go back to your first comment- the block should be stamped behind the divers side head with 5.0 or 5.7 What does it show?

You're WRONG...crackhead. They ALL came with 6-Bolt Mains.

He's right though, 2-bolt's for F-Bodies. As far as 305/350: It should be stamped on the block 5.0/5.7. If not, just pop a head. ~3.74" (305) or 4.0" (350). If you don't want to pull a head, you can hope the heads are stock and just pull the valve cover then run the head number.

All numbers can be run at www.Mortec.co

whats funny is i have a 305tpi my hood sticker says so. the owner was a mexican dude who tried to sell it to me as a 350tpi but i was to smart. but whats odd is all the little things that distinguish the 305 from 350 like the shifter **** the yellow marks on the tach all point to 350 its wierd i never understood it

Am I wrong in thinking that regardless of the engine being a tpi 350, tpi 305 there still an L98? Hey man, did you look at the casting to see if it was a 5.0 or a 5.7?

OK, your wrong. I have the original L98 short block from my 87 Corvette sitting on the floor in my garage right next to the aluminum heads that came off it. It's a two bolt main cast crank engine. In 87 they only had 200+hp.

There is so much bad info. on this site, I would really like to know where you got this info.? Was it word of mouth or did you read it some where.

Yes, your wrong also. The 305ci. is an LB9 engine, the 350ci. is the L98 engine.

Are we having fun yet?

well if it werent for the fact that you have the engine sitting right in front of you then i think many people would def fight against you on that. which goes along with the fact that I and many other people are genuinely surprised . I thought that every corvette v8 since the begining or near the beginning all had 4 bolts. (regardless of the power output)

i am not saying your wrong at all, i am just kinda surprised, and i guess a little bit more knoledgeable.

see you learn something everyday, thats why these forums are so great, besides all the misinformation that gets spread around, someone out there always has proof. its just a matter of getting that person to post what they know.

the more posts, the more you learn...keep em comin

Explain this please. You couldn't get a 350 ci motor with a 5-speed. They were auto only.

Edit: My bad, I see you have an auto. But why would the auto shift **** be any different between the 305 and 350?
