SOMONE PUT ME IN THE 14's

I have an 86 LG4 automatic. The best ive got it to stock is low 16's. I'm 16 and i wanna hit 14's but of course im on a budget. I just today had a 2.5" Flowmaster 40 series muffler put on. What is the best and cheapest way for me to hit 14's?????? Any help is great!

Not to put you down, cause I love these cars, but the only way you are getting into the 14s is with a lot of money.

First thing to do would be headers and exhaust. Will drop a few tenths off your time. Maybe you'll be high 15s.

Tires and a new tq converter. With good traction and a nice converter you'll see mid 15s.

Another thing to do would be possibly do intake, but that can get costly depending on what intake you go with.

Then there is always a cam. Which aren't too expensive themselves, but don't work to their full potential unless you get a nice set of heads ($$$).

You could also go the nitrous route. A 75 shot would do maybe a good .4-.5.

This would be easier if I knew your budget, and what your plans with the car are. But those are some basic things.

I know Damon knows his **** with carb'ed 305s. You might want to shoot him an email. I think last time he had someone near the 14s with a good budget.

Hey man, dont let people get you down. it is not to hard to get into the 14's you could do it for lets say $500-$700. For example for a very special day, do some stuff to it and go to the track. My 1989 Firebird is a 5.0 TBI. Not tuned port, and I have reached id 15's for about $50. No joke. Mine is a little different case. But I really lightened my car. It weighed in exactly at 3100 pounds. Got a good set of tires, ran it cold, advanced the timing a little, took the exhaust off, to run it open, and the ONLY OTHER MOD I HAD was a K&N, no joke. But anyways, dont give up hope on the thirdgens. They are a good platform to drag race with. Just know that to get really fast say 1's you will need something bigger. Later man,

This would be much easier if we knew your budget and your plans for your car. Do you want to eventually hit something like 11's or are you going to be satisfied with 14's? But I have an 87 5.0 TPI, and am aiming for 13's so I'll try and keep you up-dated on my success and my mods. Here's my plans for my car:

1)Home made Ram Air
2) Weight Reduction (aiming for 3500)
3)SLP Headers/Loudmouth Exhaust, no cat
4)Mini Ram intake $$$$$
5)3300 Torque Converter

Im thinking that's a reasonable 13...Maybe....I have Nitto's as well. 'll say 14's will set you back a good $500 or more. I'll let you know how I do. Im 16 as well, so this will take time, and if your like me, it'll take even longer, my parents dont pay for jack squat, I payed for my own car and Im payin for my own parts. But you fell better about yourself. Riiiiiigggggghhhhht. Good luck and peace out.

I'd do all the usual first:
1.) Fab a cold air inlet(homemade dual snorkel air cleaner using metal clothes dryer ducting, routed to the high beam sockets after removing the bulbs.)under $40
2.) Swap in a decent cam(like the '85 tpi cam 294*/294*- 202*/206*-- .403"/.415" lift at 115*...$120 new
add 1.6 ratio roller rockers(bringing lift up to .433"/.445")$140
3.) Get a free-flowing cat converter and cat-back exhaust.$250
4.) A B&M shift improver kit $27
5.) Bump up the timing a couple of degrees.(Advance it to 10-12*BTDC)$free
6.) An Edelbrock Performer intake.$115
7.) Flowtech shorty headers $85 Summit
8.) Complete tune up, ALL filters, plugs, spiral-core wires, brass-inserted cap&rotor.
9.) K$N air filter 2-tenths/2 mph. $35-40
10.) 3.73 rear gears. used from an S10. $20-50 New-$180
11.) NOS 75HP shot as a last resort!$300

Thanx for all the help guys. My friend is gonna practically give me an Edelbrock Torker II for $20. What do u think? In the long run i probably wont try for any more than low 14's w/ the 305. Also can someone direct me to a site that shows how to install the home made ram air for a carburated car i could only find TPI. More help is welcome.

If i'm not mistaken, the torker II intake from edelbrock is a low rise single plane... that would be mismatched on your 305. single plane intakes favor higher rpm power and sacrifice a bit of low end power, 305's don't breath all that well up top, I think an aluminum dual plane intake would be a better choice.
You can probably find one off someone pretty cheap too...

90rocz has some good ideas..

Alright well today i went and picked up a K&N and tomorrow im going to the track to test what kind of gain i got from the muffler and filter if its even noticeable. Thanx for the help on the intake or i probably would have bought the damn thing. I thought the Performer sounded like a better idea for my car anyway but what kind of performance gain will i get from it w/ the stock cam and stock qjet. The same friend has also offered me a Edelbrock 650cfm for $50 off of his 305 that he just sold. Would that be worth getting or is the stock qjet fine for the job. Also i still would like a site for the home made ram air for a carberated car. Thanx guys ur becoming a great help.

I'd stick with the factory Q-jet, There's entire books devoted to tuning Q-jets, and hop-up kits available.
And I totally agree about the Torker II, tho I'd still buy it at that price for a future 350. Never pass on deals like that, even if you can't use it now, you can even sell it later and make money for another mod...
Put the filter on, bump up the timing, flip the air cleaner lid over and screw it back down(upsidedown makes kinda an open element, and sounds cool too!), put in a 160* t-stat.
Run it at the track and let us know!
Good Luck bro!..
