Starter issues...please help!
Hi guys, I am having a big problem finding a starter for my 83 Z. I was running the stock 305 with the Borg and Warner 5 speed manual. I just dropped a rebuilt 350 into it, and the starter that I had just didn't want to turn it over fast enough. I figured no problem, however I have tried starters from 3 different auto parts stores, and have called 7, and 2 shops. The bendex on the starter is running into the flywheel. I have tried shims, however I have it down to 5/16 on an inch still with no luck! If I leave the starter loose in the bolts, I don't have any issues, it starts everytime. I am worried about shimming it out more than I have tried already. Does anyone know about a different starter, maybe for a newer or older car? All of the parts stores only list one starter for an 83 regardless of the tranny type. 84's list 2 different starters, however they are special order and I can't return it if it is wrong. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated, I have to break this motor in!!!

i bet you used a different flywheel on the 350 than the 305 had, i believe the 305 uses the small flywheel, and the 350 may use the large one thus causing your problem

Try shimming just the inboard bolt closet to the flywheel. Use a standard washer that will fit over the bolt between the starter and the block. Usually one washer creates the clearance needed although in some cases two washers may be necessary.
